Anne,

Marvin Bagley Black was born Dec. 3, 1885 somewhere in Alabama. He married Pearl Masten Sims in 1907. His parents were Elizha Andrew (E.A.) Black born 1862 in Alabama. He married Nancy Ann (?) in Alabama in about 1880. NAncy Anne was born in Alabama in 1866.

Marvin was one of 8 children: John L, George A.C., Susie I.,
Lizzie M., Lila, Joel A., and David.
I'm not sure when the family or Marvin moved to Ellis Co. He was my grandfather on my mother's side. He died before I was born, so I never knew him.

Charles, I think you have hit the jackpot! I have quite a bit of infor on the Sims of Ellis County. Pearl (Sims) Black was my maternal grandmother; in fact, she raised me. Her parents were John Coleman (J.C.) Sims born 19 Dec 1850 in Oxford Mississippi and Mildred Elizabeth (Norman) Sims born 5 Oct 1851 in Montgomery, Alabama. John died 4 May 1924 and Mildred (my mother was named after her) died 1 Sep 1935. They are both buried at Bethal Cemetery in Ellis County. They were married 12 Nov 1874 in Bethal, Texas. They had 8 children: Arthur Pinkney b. 30 Aug 1875, d. 23 May 1938; Pearl Masten b. 21 Aug 1885, d. 3 Dec 1972; Earl (twin to Pearl) b. 21 Aug 1885, d. 24 Feb 1887; Willie (male) b.2 Oct 1877, d. 1 Jan 1890; Edgar Thomas b. 29 May 1879, d. 1 Apr 1941 in Vaughn, NM.; Henry Palmer b. 2 Jan 1882, d. 1 Nov 1969; Leroy b. 3 dec 1888, d. 4 Jul 1889; and Mildred May b. 9 Jun 1893, d. 14 Apr 1977. All are buried at Bethal Cemetery, except for Edgar who is buried in Vaughn, NM.

John Dabney was the son of William Sims b. 7 May 1757 in Hanover Co. VA. and died in 1814 (month unknown) in Mount Pleasant, TN. He married Judith (Cross) Sims born 1756, I don't know the date of death. William and Judith married in 1773 when William was only 15 years old. They had 12 children, John Dabney being the oldest. I have this line of the Sims family back to Sir John Symes, Sr. born in 1563 in Barwick England. Another Sims line come into the picture when in about 1850.

Sir John Symes, Sr. is in a direct line from Edward the III of England. I really have to much info to put it all in an e-mail, so if you would like me to send you copies of what I have, jsut let me know your mailing address. I am in contact with with the son of Dr. Will Sims of Waxahachie, Texas and his son Roger Sims of Florida.

i hope this helps you out. It would be great to correspond with you on the Sims line.

hope to hear from you soon,
Pam Hale

In response to your inquiry, I, too, have quite a lot of information concerning the Sims family. My great-grandmother was Maria Elizabeth (Bettie) Sims, daugher of Pinckney Coleman and Mary Ann Sims, and the wife of James Thomas Johnston. I grew up in Ellis County and still live near Bethel. I have been researching this family for the past year. J. H. and Jimmie Sims'son, Johnny Boy, is my neighbor. I also have an aunt who is 91 years old who lives very close. She has an excellent memory. Maybe we could fill in some blanks for you. I would enjoy hearing from you. My address: Eve Salisbury, 528 Hollis Road, Waxahachie, TX 75167. Phone: (972)938-1128. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience.

Hi Pam,
In response to your response to Charles Sims: I, too, have quite alot of information on the Sims Family. I grew up near Bethel, and still live here. J. B. (Johnny Boy) Sims is my close neighbor. My great-grandmother was Maria Elizabeth (Bettie) Sims, daughter of Pinckney Coleman Sims and Mary Ann (Sims) Sims, and wife of James Thomas Johnston.
If I can halp you fill in any blanks, please contact me at
528 Hollis Road, Waxahachie, TX 75167. My phone number is (972)938-1128. My aunt and uncle are 91 years old and live nearby. They both have excellent memories and grew up in Bethel. I've been researching the Sims and Johnston families for the past year. I alternate between the two,
which I probably shouldn't do.

If I can help you in your search in any way, please feel free to contact me.

I am trying to find out who M.A.Sims was. In the Ellis Co census for either 1900 or 1910, located by paternal grandfather J.P.Minnick and wife, Minerva Bayless Minnick and children living in Bristol. Living with them was M. A. Sims, listed as Mother.
I thought it would have to be one of their mothers who was widowed, remarried, and was widowed again.
J. P. Minnick was sheriff in Waxahachi from 1902-1906, sometime around 1915 he moved to Petrolia TX. Could this M.A. Sims be anyone you know of.
Appreciate any information very much. Virginia Minnick Lee (Texarkana TX)

I am looking for information on my great grandparents, James Monroe Curry, b. 2 Mar 1849 and d. 13 Dec 1919 and Mary L. (Few) Curry, b. 22 Jun 1858 and d. 14 Aug 1927. I believe they were both born in Tennessee and migrated to Ellis Co., Texas. They had at least 8 children: W.C. (Wilborn), May, Emma Leona, Betty, Lacey, James Otis and Laura Maude (my grandmother). James and Mary are buried in the Midlothian Cemetery in Midlothian, Texas. James may have gone by the name of "John". Betty's son Ray (known locally as "Daddy Ray") White and his wife Pat lived in Venus, Texas up until thier deaths a couple of years ago. Laura Maude and her husband Marvin Bishop Gilliam are buried in Shannon Rose Hill Cemetery in Handley, Texas.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
