Judge Sullivan,
Your reply is appreciated. My great grandmother was Mary Jane Cockerham, b. Nov. 11,1826 d. March 15, 1891, married Jesse Holmes Baird, b. July 5, 1823 d. Aug. 26, 1908. Her father was Henry Cockerhan who died in 1834 and was married to Polly (Mary) Prowell. Both families lived in Smith County, TN. Is this a link with your Cockerham info? I likely will join the association, especially if there is a link. Where is the reunion?

Hi Gene, I don't have a copy of the Cockerham Book, but I have pieces of it that tell me that the Cockerham line is America began with Capt. William C. b. 1593 Dorset,Eng. Came to Amer. 1637; d.1669 Surry Co. VA. After four generations in VA.
some of the family moved to South Carolina for perhaps one generation, then to Amite Co.
Miss.,from which to wound up in Central La.
I am called to dinner, will return later. Tom

My information is that John Cockerham b. 1735 and died in Amite Co. MS in 1844. Pardon me, he didn't die...he was killed at 108 years, from a fall off of his horse. This is quite a guy to have for an ancestor.
His children moved to Catahoula parish,La. around 1839. His granddaughter Phoebe Cockerham married John Wagner and they were my GGGGrandparents.
They didn't all move at the same time; and I' sure some didn't move at all; and some might have strayed off in a differant direction from others. But central Tenn. doesn't seem to great a stretch from Barnwell, S.Car., or for that matter the James River area of VA.
I don't know where the Reunion is in 2002,
but I think it might be a good idea to make inquiry of some of the members of the Asso., regarding possable cousins who drifted over to TN. Good Luck Tom
