Gagliardi family in Calabria

My own grandfather and his brother settled in Massachusetts in the early 1900's, coming from Miglierina which is in Provincia di Catanzaro, Calabria.

I read a book by Gay Talese, "Unto the Sons", in which he traces his own ancestry in Calabria (his father settled in Ocean City). He had a great grandmother whose maiden name was Gagliardi. He describes the Gagliardi family in his family's home town, Maida, which is probably only 10 miles from Miglierina. The Gagliardi family was a major influence in the Calabrian town Vibo Valentia -- there was even a "Palazzo Gagliardi" which I visited; it is now very run down.

I would love to discover the links among the various Gagliardi clans in the US. It would be great if someone had information from Calabria that helped with the connections.

One wonders if the various Gagliardi clans from Calabria are linked by some common ancestors. I haven't any clues but I have conlcuded that my own great grandfather must have been a new comer to his village of Miglierina since the cemetery has very little evidence of our last name. The Talese book has a fairly long account of the Gagliardi family in Vibo Valentia and then the connection to Maida which is probably a day's hike from where my family lived. The distances from Vibo Valentia to Catanzaro to Cosenza are not all that great -- 52 km from Catanzaro to Cosenza as the crow flies, or about 32 miles. Of course, only crows can travel a direct course over that terrain. Never the less, the distances are not great. It is easy to think of generations of the family fanning out across much of Calabria over many years.

Hi Peter thank you for answering. Are there an Talareco's in your line? My grandmother's name was Charia Talarico. I have some relatives in Canada, whom I've been trying to comunicate with. They are younger than I am,and have a hard time going back. When I was growing up I didn't know of any other Gagliardi. Now I realize that there quite a few,and they come from all areas of Italy Thank you Frank Gagliardi

Just to add to this - my nonna was a Gagliardi & my branch of the family were from Taurianova (Calabria). I visited last year and found a room of the old hospital had been sponsored by the Gagliardi family. I understand they were somewhat aristocratic & influential in that town. I have always wondered where the Calabrian Gagliari's originated from & what our family crest & mottoes were like - if anyone has this info, I would love to hear it.

Hi, even though this seems to be an old thread, I happened on it searching the net for the name Gagliardi.

I came with my family from Italy in the early 70's, my father was from Calabria, and has many brothers and sisters still there, and visits every year.
