This cemetery is in desperate need of Help. I am trying to locate owners/trustees of this Cemetery. I would like to help in preserving is as would my family. My GGG Grandparents are buried here. There are markers destroyed, broken or missing. There is a huge tree that has fallen in the middle of the cemetery. It is over run in grass and weeds, etc. Other surnames listed are Bearden, Clopton, Dixon, Glaspy, Ford, Goodall, Hodge, Johnson, Lindsey, Martin, Medlock, McNew, Powell, Roberts, Rowell, Russell, Slape, & Wilson. Most of the markers are 100+ years old. I have a copy of the original deed giving the land to the church and graveyard...trustee Anderson Gordon dated 1877. Anyone with information or is willing to help get ownership to this cemetery please contact me. It is located outside of Morrilton on Hwy 95. I have several pictures of the shape that this cemetery is in.

As old as this cemetery is, it will probably qualify for the National Register of Historic Places. If it is inside the city limits, a complaint should be made to their code enforcement officer and the city should send someone out to clean it up. If it qualifies for the National Register, there may be funds that go along with that which could help with maintenance. You can check online.

The Cemetery is not within the city limits and several graves are over 150 years old. Including My gg grandparents who are buried there.

Is there a fair sized church nearby that could adopt the cemetery and make it a church project to maintain the cemetery for the good of everyone. As old as the cemetery is, there are probably descendants of the deceased in about every church in town, especially the churches closest to it.

Good luck,

I had been looking for this Cemetery on several occasions and finally found it last week. Cemetery is still in bad shape, brush overgrowth and deadfall everywhere. Several damaged headstones over a large portion of the cemetery. There is evidence of someone cleaned up seveal of the graves but not all. I am planning on going back this fall and clean up some if not most of it. I have a GG Grandfather William Powell buried here along with other relatives with the surname Roberts.

Would love to schedule a clean up day...some Saturday possibly. When would be good for you? We can do an announcement thru the local paper and radio and maybe get more people to help. I am planning on making a new sign for the cemetery because the one by the road is so old and faded you can't read it.

That sounds good. I spoke with several of my family today and they said they would come help as well. I live in Whitefield, Oklahoma and it will be about a 2 hour drive for me so a saturday will work out great. Also I got loaded in seed ticks while I was there last week so I think we should wait til after a couple good freezes before we do this. If you think I need to contact anyone as to get permission I can, but I don't think anyone will mind the cleanup. Thanks for everything. Im looking forward to helping preserve this cemetery for our ancestors.

Great! Talked it over with my parents and they are also on board with the idea. My email is stephnix001@yahoo.com. Just shoot me an email about 3 weeks ahead of time so I can make sure I am off at work and I can get the word out locally and maybe we can get even more folks to come out.

Ladies,

You sound like a true blessing for this almost forgotten cemetery. It might be advisable to wear long pants with boots if you have them. If not, some really bulky socks might help. There may be a snake or two, most of which are harmless, still around. I am disabled and live far from your area so advice is all I can offer. A property must only be 50 years to qualify for the national registry which includes many cemeteries. If approved, a nice government sign will be put at the entrance. Sometimes grant money is available for projects. I am sure you could use the help. Please go to nps.gov/nr and click on quicklinks. From there you can get the instructions you need and get a good idea if you qualify. You might want to visit the library to see if there was anything of historical significance that took place in the area and include the information in the paperwork. Good Luck!
