Generation No. 3

5. TIMOTHY3 KENNEDY (THOMAS2, UNKNOWN1)1,2 was born 1802 in The Spitall, Tipperary Ireland, and died 27 August 1883 in Nullamanna, via Inverell NSW. He married CATHERINE MCGRATH2 28 February 1835 in Tipperary, Ireland, daughter of PATRICK MCGRATH and MARY HEPHANAN. She was born 19 August 1808 in Tipperary Ireland, and died 1860 in Tamworth NSW.

Notes for TIMOTHY KENNEDY:
Timothy and Catherine came to Australia as assisted immigrants. Their ship the Jane Gifford left Plymouth on the 2nd October 1840 and arrived in Sydney on the 13th February 1841. George Mason was the Master and Charles Gordon was the Surgeon.
The Shipping List states that Timothy , a labourer, was a native of The Spittall, Tipperary and was the son of James Thomas Kennedy, a labourer, and Mary Murphy and his age at embarkation was 38. He was a catholic that could read and write and in good health. It states that Catherine , a house servant, was native of same place, a daughter of Patrick McGrath, labourer, and Mary Hephranan, and her last birthday was 28. Also with them was their children Thomas age 7 years and three months and Patrick 1 year and three months.

Between (at least) May 1842 and June 1844(children's baptisms) they were living at Glouster Street Sydney.

1848 abode Pages River, Timothy a farmer. Margaret's baptism
1850 Singleton baptism for Timothy and Catherine.

The Kennedys went to live at Yarrabin near Mudgee. That is where Bridget met and married John Eckersley Newbury in 1857.

A family story is that Timothy panned for gold around Tamworth sometime in the 1850's.Catherine died at Tamworth in 1860, can't find registration. Then Timothy went to live with some of his family at Nullamanna until his death on the 27th August 1883. On his death certificate it states that he was an 83 year old shepherd, born in Ireland and had been in NSW for 43 years. His children are given as Thomas 58, Mary 56 yrs, Bridget 42 yrs, Patrick 40 yrs, Johanna 34yrs, Margaret 32 yrs, and Timothy 30 yrs ,living. Patrick Kennedy, his son, was the informant. His cause of death was given as old age which luckily he only had for six weeks. I guess that means that he had been well until six weeks before his death. He was buried on the 29th at Inverell but there is no headstone as council had a cleanup of headstones about 1924. The other Kennedys that lived at Nullamanna lived there until about 1900

Family stories tell that Thomas Kennedy was forced to leave the colony of Queensland for cattle duffing. He left his wife and children on a selection in the northern Queensland town of Eton.

Thomas' age on embarkation is given as 7years and 3months. This means he would have been born about July 1833 (before his parents were married). He was baptised 24th July 1836 at Tipperary (fairly old for a Catholic baptism) His sponsors were Stephen and Margaret Kennedy. He married Sarah Lowe in Qld about 1869. He lived for some years in Queensland. He worked on 'Newstead' and Kings Plains Station. He died at the Inverell District Hospital on the 22nd June 1925 age 89 (Means birth year was 1836 ) and is buried in the Inverell Cemetery RC Section. At the time of death he was living at Henderson Street. Patrick, as informant on Timothys death cert gives Thomas' age as 58 means he was born in 1825, maybe should have been 48, and maybe he was 4 years and 3 months when they embarked.

Hello Elizabeth,
Thank you for some info. I've been looking for!
William Kennedy (baptised 11/10/1805) was my g-g-g grandfather. I didn't know his parents until now. I am descended from his son Patrick. Patrick and his family travelled out on the 'Simmonds ' arriving in Sydney on 12/4/1855 as assisited immigrants.
looks like they all ended up around Murrurundi/Tamworth.
Do you have any info. re. the wives, such as Mary Perkins and Mary Heffernan? I have Mary Perkins parents: Thomas Perkins and Margaret Shannon and their approx. dates but that's it.
What is your connection? Any info. I can pass on I am pleased to do so.
If you wish to email directly my email is:

Hi ... in looking for a John Kennedy born in 1820 in County Tipperary I saw your listing for same as seventh child of William2 Kennedy and Winifred Murphy. Can you please tell me where you got your info? "My" John Kennedy would have immigrated in 1830 with his family to the US settling in Pennsylvania so don't know if this was the same family.

I got this info off the internet and I am trying to establish a connection between William, Thomas [who I am descended from] and a John Kennedy.

Information on William is not confirmed. Just a gut feeling he is a brother of Thomas Kennedy.

Have you done any Kennedy research in Ireland??

No I haven't done any research on the Kennedy's in Ireland. We are going soon. I was looking at John Kennedy because he married the sister of my great-great-grandmother and I am trying to get a lead on my great-great-grandmother.

My g-g-g-granfather was William Kennedy born about1780 in Tipperary IR. He married Winefred Murphy I know they had children Timothy, born in 1805, and Stephen, born in 1808. could this be the connection we're looking for?
I am going to Ireland in june & would like to take some time to look for histories! Don't know where to begin.

My descendants grandfather is William Kennedy, married to Winefred Murphy. I have the date they were married [1849] Also, I have the descendents childrens names & where most of them are buried in the USA. I'd love to hear from you to compare & exchange notes. Finding Family in Ireland has been a learning fun experience. Great to see my lineage in your descendents list. annie
