I found two HANCOCK's listed in Pickens County in an 1840 census index for Alabama. They are T.B. & Elbert. I believe Elbert to be my gggrandfather and think T.B. to have been a close relative (father/uncle/brother). I do not have access to an 1840 census and would like information on these two families. T.B. may be Thornton HANCOCK who is in Itawamba County MS in 1860. Elbert W. HANCOCK and his family are also in MS (Marshall & Itawamba Counties) in the mid 1840's and later. I have additional information and will be glad to share what I have. I am Billy Hancock, e-mail trek@teclink.net

Billy, thank you for the quick response. I think that the Calvin Hancock from MS who later appeared in Pickens Co. AL is maybe a clue to the Calvin, born 1776 in NC. As to the Hancock-Evans-Crawford links, that is not familiar to me. My husband's Hancock's are from coastal NC for 200 years. Only a few left in the 1700's and 1800's. We live on a small island, seems to have agreed well with most of the folks who settled here. There is an unrelated line of Hancock's in Pitt Co., where there are also many Evans and Crawfords. I'll keep your note in my file. I have many Pitt Co. connections.
Thank you so much.
Susan

Susan,

Cavin L. HANCOCK (age 16,b MS) appears in the Thornton (63, SC)& Eliza (58, SC) HANCOCK household, # 860, in the 1860 Itawamba County, MS census. Judson (19, b MS), Joseph S. (26,MS) & Martha (24, MS) make up the remainder of the household. It would seem this is not the Calvin you are looking for but the name may be a link to a grandfather/uncle/brother etc. Those HANCOCK's of my line seem to be closely related to CRAWFORDs, EVANS & GRIFFINs who were in NC & SC in the late 1700's early 1800's. Have you encountered any of these family relationships?

Billy, do you know anything about Calvin Hancock on the 1830 Census for Pickens Co? He was married to Hetty Ann Guthrie and they were from Carteret Co. NC. Cannot find them in NC after 1820 when Calvin would have been 45 years old.
