Last year I received the following information from another fellow searcher of Auchmoody history. It is so interesting that I decided to post it. The information was obtained in 1986, from a gentleman who had gone to Scotland and who spent some time in the library researching the family name.

"Auchmoody or Achmoody or Auchmuty originated from lands of the same name in the parish of Markinck, Fife. The first name on record was ROTHER DE ADMULTI (as the name was then spelled) year 1296. DAVID DE ADMULTI appeared 1466. JOHN ADMOWTIE was a town councilman in the city of Stirling in 1565. . . appeared again as JOHN AUCHMOTTIE in 1576. WILLIAM AUCHMOWTY in 1584. ROBERT AUCHMUTIE,a barber in Edinburgh in 1860. JOHN AND ALEXANCER AUCHMOTY were among Scottish undertakers granted allotments in Ulster in 1610. "

I hope you all enjoy the information.

Natalie, Quite a few years ago a gentleman from Decatur, Georgia, near Atlanta wrote my father and included the variations of the spelling that you mentioned. Also when I was in Scotland in '89 there were a couple of towns that had a familiar ring, one being Auchterarder. In my family there are at least two Auchmoody/Dubois marriages in different generations from New Paltz, NY. Does anything like that show up in your genealogy? Gail Auchmoody Hays

Hi Gail. Yes, your information does ring a bell. Since I posted the query, I have been able to gather a lot of information about my family. We begin in the US with James Auchmoody who married Maria Deyo. Then James Auchmoody who married Elizabeth Smith. Then Abraham Auchmoody who married Elizabeth Van Aken. Then James Ackmoody who married first Sarah Prine and then Esther Chaffee. The children from his first marriage kept the Ackmoody name while the children from his second marriage were called Moody. This begins with my grandfather whose name was Herman Moody. I have gathered a lot of information on my family. Let me know if you would like any of it.

Hi again, Natalie
It was nice getting such a quick response from you. So far I can only get back as far as my 2gr. grandfather whose name was David P. Do you have any names of the other children of Abraham and Elizabeth or even the brothers of Abraham. There is a Peter Auchmoody in Abraham's generation and since David's middle initial is P. that could be a clue. David did name one of his sons Abram. Tomorrow I will get to work on that.
How have you done your research? I would be grateful for any suggestions since I am new to using the computer for this project. It is fun though! Gail

In your Auchmuty research have you run across the following:
Mary Auchmuty (or Auchmady) married Elijah Crandall 28 1754 at Westerly RI. His half-brother Stephen married Isabel Auchmuty, dau of Charles Auchmuty of Charlestown RI on 16 Dec 1762 in Hopkinton RI. Any leads you can give would be appreciated.

Sorry John, I have not come across any family members by that spelling. I have concentrated on Auchmoody because I have had lots of luck tracing my ancestors with that spelling and apparently they consistently spelled their name that way. My grandfather was the only male in his family (he had 4 sisters.)
Some years ago I was contacted (through my father) by a gentleman, Charles Robert Auchmutey, who lived in Decatur, Georgia. He was from one of the other 3 branches of the family but was researching all 3. There were several spellings among the branches. I have not been in touch with him for about 10 years, but this is his address: Charles Robert Auchmoody, 1587 Linda Dr. Decatur, Georgia 30032, ph. 1-404-289-2054.
Good luck, Gail

Hi Gail,
Can you give more information about your David and Abram Auchmoody? Like approximate dates of birth? Any spouse or sibling names?

I have a large database of Auchmoodys of various spellings and there is one David with several sisters, and a son Abram E., as well as sons Augustus, Myron and Hermon, and a daughter Martha.

This David, I have as David A. Auchmoody, born 1821, died 1901. He was married to Amanda A. DOBBS, b. abt. 1829, d. 1914.

David A. was son of Abraham and Sarah/Sally (LOW)Auchmoody.
This family lived in the town of Lloyd, Ulster County, NY

If any of this sounds familiar, let me know.
I think you emailed me back in February. Sorry for the delay getting back to you.

Hi John,

Do you know the name of Charles Auchmuty's wife and parents? I'm trying to trace back to Auchmuty's in Charlestown, RI and have not had much luck.

Thank you,
Linda
