Searching for Arvil Garfield Brogdon/Broglin. Lived Roane County, TN. Died 1960, Harriman, TN. Wife Maggie Alice Hill. From information found, he was the illigitimate son of Melinda (Nancy) C. Selvidge and an unknown man. Melinda (Nancy) was married in 1860, Roane County, TN, to William Brogdon, born NC. William deserted during the Civil War and went to Missouri. He married two more times, not divorcing Nancy in TN. She had more children after William left, one being Arvil/Orville.

Can you please tell me more? My ggrandfather was William T. Broglin from Bertie County and was in the Civil War. He changed sides during the war too. He has been my total dead end...maybe we can connect. I do have his pension papers from the Civil War era and I found out as I had long suspected that before his desertion during the Civil war his name was Brogden. Would love to share if we can find the connection. These last names seem to change alot depending on who was writing what paper. Hope you will be the force to knock my brick wall down. My William Broglin is buried in Bertie County.

My William deserted in TN and went to MO where he married two more times. He died in Polk Co., MO, before 1904. Sound familiar?

No sorry my William Broglin was in Bertie County NC and I know he married twice there. If yours had any Bertie County NC connection they would have to be related as this was a very small family in Bertie County. I realize most of the relatives went on to TN, but this line stayed in Bertie County.

My grandfather, Alexander Broglin was a twin to Arvil Broglin/Brogdon. He spoke of his mother being Nancy Selvedge. Both of my grandparents were illiterate making it difficult to get any recorded history. My grandfather, Alex, mentioned that at one time the Harriman courthouse had burned down, therefore losing all records. The family was always curious as to why twins had a variation of the surname. Alexander Broglin was also born in Harriman, Tennessee, as well as my father, Warren G. Broglin, and his siblings. In the 50's my parents and I visited Arvil and his wife, Maggie in the hills of Harriman. Alexander married Laura (Lula) Purdy, whose family was also from Harriman. If anyone has anymore connections, please let me know.

My Broglins have been a tough crowd to break. I did find out my great grandfather was a Brogden and changed his name during the Civil War per his pension records.

I did speak with a gentleman a couple of years ago that uses Broglin but said his dad was Brogden. Said he was from Tennessee and when his uncle joined the Army in WWII the military changed it to Broglin and he kept it and his father still uses Brogden. I have a sister in Harriman so know the area well

I don't know if there is any connection but I'm from Harriman and I'm trying to find out where my family came from but I'm stuck. My great great grandmother was Doshie Broglin, she married Martin Roberts.

I am sorry, but I have no information past Arvil BROGDON. I just found out, through DNA testing, that Arvil's father was a SHIPLEY and not BROGDON as previously thought. Arvil's brother, John, was the son of John FULLER.

Well I guess there is a possiblity of a connection as there does not seem to be alot of Broglins. I have a sister that lives in Oakdale, just up the mountain from you. Small world.
