Cathie,
My Clevelands were from Canada, New York, Michigan. My Fred was born in MI, his father Merritt was born in Canada, married in New York. Then moved to Michigan.

Sue,

You are incorrect in your lineage. It is correct that Roger Cleveland and his second wife Dorcus unknown were the parents of Alexander Cleveland. Alexander married Mary unknown. There has never been a Milly Presley found as suggested in the 1899 Cleveland Genealogies. Alexander & Mary had a son John who married Elizabeth Coffey. They were the parents of Benjamin, one of the heroes of the Battle of Kings Mtn. He married Mary Graves. John & Elizabeth also had a son John who married Mary (Mollie) McCann. They had a son John who married Comfort Gilbert. John & Comfort had a son Benjamin who married Amelia Massilva Hooper. Benjamin & Amelia were the parents of James Monroe Cleveland who married Catherine Wright.

Hope this helps,
Grace

Dear Grace,
Thank you for your kind and prompt reply. The information regarding Alexander and Milly Cleveland came from a bound notebook given to me by my late grandmother (granddaughter of John Luther Cleveland and Annie Hamilton Upshaw.) It was compiled and written by our relatives, George Ann Cleveland andColleen Hicks Clenard, in 1985. I am just starting on this fun new hobby of geneology research.
It is clear that you have looked into the Cleveland family, and I appreciate the clarification. The e-mail you sent me traced the Cleveland's to James Monroe and Catherine Wright. I assume you are some how related? My records end with the son of James and Catherine.....John Luther Cleveland. He and Annie Upshaw were the parents of my g.grandmother.
Be all that as it may, if you are related or interested in following up on this, please feel free to write back.
Thank You, Sue

Dear Sue,

Be that as it may. No matter who compiled a book, the original source for the Milly Presley/Alexander Cleveland fairy tale was the 1899 Cleveland Genealogies. What is written is "there may have been a second wife for Alexdander Cleveland named Milly Presley." Or something to that effect, I don't have my books here at our summer place. The 1899 Cleveland cousins were researching the Northern line (Moses) and since they had to research all the Clevelands they researched the Southern line as well. They have lots of errors and misinformation in this line. The Northern line is pretty much correct. They never even found Roger Cleveland and those parish records were at that time in the Virginia Archives. No where else has any mention ever been made except what has been "copied" year after year, by different researchers. I have researched the Presley family back to England and have found no Presley/Cleveland connection. Neither have the Presley or Cleveland family societies.

I have John Luther Cleveland born 28 Oct 1851 in Stewart County, Georgia, but nothing else on him.

I am a Cleveland descendant of Jacob and Mildred (Milley) White Cleveland. Jacob's line; Roger and his first wife>John>John. I have 50,000 records in my data base representing 40 years of research.
