I am looking for Caroline Grace Damrell who was born in Boston. Not sure when she was born, but she had a daughter born about 1876. Caroline married Alexander Hawkins, and they lived their life in Boston. Their daughter was named Carrie Grace Hawkins, married to Thomas McVeigh. Carrie worked at a funeral home in the early part of the 1900's. It was said that the Damrell name was well known on Beacon Hill in Boston. Any help would be appreciated.

Damrell the fire chief is very famous in Boston- he was the chief when the Great Boston Fire of 1972 occurred and had checked out he fire in Chicago the year before to report on what had happened and all but predicted that such an occurrence would happen in Boston, which it did a year later.

Good luck on your search.

Oops! In my previous message I meant to say that Chief Damrell was chief in 1871, not 1971/2. By the way, if you contact the Boston Society in Boston which operates the Old State House, which has a huge exhibit on the history of Boston through fire, you can probably get info on chief Damrell.

Thanks for the information. The wife of John Damrell was a sister to an ancestor of mine. I am trying to get informtiton on the Hill family from Boston. Another sister to the wife of John Damrell was married to a Learned (I don't know the first name yet) who had a stationery and book store in Boston. In the notes a relative left he said that the Damrell family had a home on Martha's Vineyard.

Capt. John S. Damrell was on Martha's Vineyard in August 1883 when a huge fire burned down all of Vineyard Haven, Mass. He was on the scene and helped direct the firefighters.

I am interested in him because I am currently researching this fire.

The Boston Globe wrote in 1883 about this fire that Damrell “was gladly hailed by owners of threatened buildings. He was given control by the town authorities.” The New Bedford Evening Standard noted that “under his direction and good judgment a wise selection was made of places to stand and fight the burning element.”

Can you verify the years he was the chief in Boston? Or that he was the chief in the great Boston fire of 1872?

Thanks -
Chris

Surnames: John S. Damrell and Susan E. Hill
We are producing a film about John S. Damrell - telling his story and contributions to fire safety in America. The dramatic center is Boston's Great Fire of 1872 and its aftermath.

John S. Damrell and Susan Emily Hill married April 11, 1850 in Cambridge, MA.

Susan's parents: John B. Hill and Susan Hill (one source has her mother's maiden name as "Snelling", but Susan E. Damrell's death certificate lists her mother's maiden name as "Monk" from Stoughton, MA.) Susan Emily (Hill) Damrell died March 10, 1893 of cancer at 47 Hancock Street in Boston (family home). She was 64 years old. John S. Damrell died Nov. 3, 1905 a couple years after retiring from post of Inspector of Boston Buildings.

We would appreciate more information on John S. Damrell and Susan Emily Hill Damrell's family and descendents.
