Looking for my greatgrandfather supposed to be French Canadian lived near Big Rapids Michigan father of my grandmother who was born in 1888, he and my greatgrandmother divorced and he remarried a woman who was kind to my family and may have had other children. I don't remember why, but he may be somehow linked to Delaware, or New Hampshire. He died about 1930 in Michigan.

Hi Karen! My greatgrandfather was Samuel Thomas Gokee, maybe there's a connection??
Born about 1882, lived primarily in Petoskey,
MI. Understand he is of French-Canadian descent. Married Pearl L., had five children.
If this sounds remotely close (maybe cousins?) please leave a message. THANKS!!!

I am looking for Antoine Gokey who was a member of the Sac Fox Tribe of Oklahoma. One of his children could have been John Gokey born around 1850 who is my g-g-grandfather. The tribe was moved from the Great Lakes region. French Canadians fur traders had lived with all the Indian tribes of the region and it appears that the Gokey name came from the French name "Gauthier". These men were U.S. interpreters for the SF tribe at that time. Any help?

Dear Karen:
Sorry for delay in answering. I have found that FR/Can fur traders lived with the Gr Lakes Indian Tribes and intermarried. The British uprooted the French and the Indians began to be moved south along the Mississippi. If your related lived/died in Michigan, I'd guess he was not part Indian
and didn't have to move. My relatives were Indian and began their migration south (ultimately to Oklahoma). There is a man in Miami, OK, named Orin Gokey whose father was named Jacob but he doesn't know much about his ancestors. I'm still digging.

Hello,
I found Henry Gokee listed as living with my family members on the census records. He was 13 in the year 1920 living in Tuscola, Mich. I copied the record.

Dear Tawanna
My name is Judith Gokey-Domke, I live in Burbank Ca. I have recently become interested in my family tree. As I have been cursing the web I have noticed the name of Gokey/Gauthier quite often. I was very surprised, as we have friends with the last name Gauthier in Sherman Oaks CA. The only information I have is my Grandfather name, Willis D Gokey, 1872 - 1945. He married May ?, they had 11 children, who were all born in Madera Ca. Can you give me some guidence or direction that I may go to find out information? Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. judi@ccinet.com

Dear Judith,

Hi! Unfortunately I don't know a lot of information on the family name, other than similiar findings of yours. My understanding is the name originated from GAUTHIER, a french name and have also heard it has a connection to Canada. It was my grandmother's birth name and I have been able to find proof she and her parents lived in Petoskey, MI. in 1941. There are a lot of Gokee's in the white pages throughout the state of Michigan. Good luck with your search! Let me know if I can help.
