I am seeking information on Mary Selena Kalanquin, who was born in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France on 4 May 1843. Her father was Christopher or Thomas Kalanquin. We were told that her mother's name was Cecile or Sophia Chaciou. Mary Selena Kalanquin married Phillip Jacquot in France, date unknown.

The family came to the United States about 1866. They first stopped in Pennsylvania, then in La Crosse, Wisconsin, (where they worked in the lumber business), and then settled in Clay County, Indiana, in 1869. They were coal miners in Indiana. They changed the Jacquot name to Jacobs after arriving in the US.

Mary Selena Kalanquin Jacquot/Jacobs had a son in France on 2 Jan. 1865 named Jules August. Her husband Phillip Jacquot may have not been the child's father. But the child went by the Jacquot/Jacobs name.

On the 1870 census of Clay Co., Indiana, the family of Julius "Calanqua" is living nearby the Jacquot/Jacobs family. Julius was born in France about 1846. His wife Mary is from Ohio. Their first child Clara (2 years) was born in Wisconsin and their second child Julia (5 months) was born in Indiana. John Cotton, age 30, from France was living with them. I believe that this Julius is a relative, possibly a brother, of Mary.

On the 1880 census of Clay County, Indiana, Mary's father, listed as Thomas Kalanquin, age 67 and born in France, was living with the Jacquot/Jacobs family.

Any information on this family (other relatives who came to America?) and their roots in France would be appreciated.

Your Clara is my great-great-grandmother, daughter of Jules (Julius) Prosper Kalanquin born in Frahier, Haute-Saone France and Mary Kalanquin born in Ohio. Jules and Mary were 1st cousins (their fathers were brothers). I would imagine that your Mary Selena Kalanquin must have been related somehow, but I don't think they were siblings. Jules was born on Sept 29, 1843. Cousins perhaps? Do you happen to know what town she was from. If so maybe try looking at http://www.servancnaute.fr/ It has excellent birth records although it could be challenging if you don't read French. I would search for her in Frahier and possibly the surrounding villages in the Haute-Soane region of France. I've just recently started digging in on this line myself. They seem fascinating!

If true, that would make Julius her brother. Emilie appears to have named her daughter Mary Selena.

I just found your message to me. I had stopped using my Yahoo e-mail account several months ago. You are right--she is Emilie Jospehine. I used that web site last winter to figure out the relationships. She was the sister of Jules. I'd like to correspons with you about the family.
