Verlinda appears to be the daughter of Thomas Swearingen and first wife Ruth Beal.

197. Verlinda Swearingen, probably born ca 1775, Montgomery Co, MD, died ca Mar 1846 (probate papers dated 9 Mar 1846), Johnson Co, MO. She was named in the 1800 estate settlement papers, "John Ray the Husband of Verlinda Ray". John Ray was born ca 1765-1770, MD, died 13 Oct 1820, St Louis, MO. He and Verlinda married ca 1790. They lived in MD, Warren Co, KY, and Howard Co, MO.
Their children were James Swearingen Ray, born 1790-1800, died 1844, married Mary Adams in TN on 17 Jan 1816. Mary died ca Apr 1846, St Francois Co, MO; Ruth Clary Ray, born 15 Oct 1795, MD, died 2 Dec 1855, Williamson Co, TX, married Birkett D. Bowmer, 24 Dec 1812, in Warren Co, KY; Mary H. Ray, born 1797, KY, died ca 1862, possibly in Jackson Co, MO, married Thomas E. Dickey on 18 Jul 1815, in Warren Co, KY; Benjamin B. Ray, born 1798, KY, died Aug 1833, Manchester Springs, St Louis Co, MO, married Angelina Rose on 26 Aug 1825, Audrain Co, MO; Elizabeth Ray, born 7 Aug 1802, KY, died 19 Dec 1880, Johnson Co, MO, married Robert D. Morrow on 23 Nov 1820, Howard Co, MO; Verlinda Griffin Ray, born 13 May 1809, Warren Co, KY, died 10 Jun 1890, Johnson Co, MO, married Pleasant Rice on 2 Aug 1826, Lafayette Co, MO; John Goin/Guinn Ray, born 9 Sep 1812, Warren Co, KY, married Polly Hall in Feb 1832, Lafayette Co, MO, married (2) Harriett H. Gearheart, 1 Aug 1844, Lafayette Co, MO; and Sally S. Ray, born 16 Jul 1816, Warren Co, KY, died before May 1847, Johnson Co, MO, married John Kelly on 20 Aug 1832, Lafayette Co, MO.

Much of the data on this family was contributed by Barbara Brown who found the following record: Montgomery Co, MD, Probate Records, 9 Apr 1800, p334-335, "The first acc't of Elemelech Swearingen Executor of Thomas Swearingen late of Montgomery County deceased". Among the legatees named were Daniel Swearingen, William D. Swearingen, Obed Swearingen, Sam'l Swearingen, John Wilcoxen the Husband of Elizabeth Wilcoxen, Thomas Swearingen, John Ray the Husband of Verlinda Ray, Cassandra Swearingen, Sarah Swearingen, Creece, and Hezekiah.

Thomas Swearingen's will did not mention Verlinda; however, the estate papers named her a legatee. The wording for her was the same as for some of the other legatees which leads us to believe she was also Thomas' daughter.

Karen do you have a copy of the estate papers? If you do could you send me a copy at my e-mail or snail mail.I have another wife for Thomas. If you would like this info let me know. I thought John was to old to have all the children you sent, you have opened a diffrent door. I still can't figure him in KY in 1781.Thanks.

You have another wife for Thomas Swearingen, other than Ruth and Mary? What name do you have and do you have documentation?

I only just now realized that John Ray born 1765-1770 could not be the John Ray you found in 1781. Here's what Barbara found: "John Ray was present in KY by 1800/01 when he appears in the Warren Co, KY tax list. He disappears from the Warren Co deeds (he was Justice of the Peace) in 1816 and from the KY state legislature, where he represented Warren Co (1803-1816), and appears in MO as delegate to the territorial legislature and to the 1820 constitutional convention in St Louis."

There are so VERY many John's. I think you are right. Lincoln Co."JOHN" is not the same one. Who do you have as John of Warren Co. father? The John in Lincoln county was a neighbor of Thomas, Obed and other Swearingen
family members. I can't figure this out. I have records on both Lincoln and the Warren co. John's. I live in Owensboro KY area north of Warren Co. E-Mail me at allpiper@psci.net. Thanks

Karel, Can you tell me where you found the name Ruth Beal for Verlinda's mother. I found Thomas's will and I thought it was Baker. You have been a great help. I have to check the probate papers for Verlinda in Johnson Co.,MO. I found a cemetary listing and it said she was born 1829. Could be grand-daughter. John Verlinda are REAL trouble when they get to Missouri.Figure he is buried under the ARCH. Could not find a grave in the whole state for him.

From the known and estimated birth dates of Verlinda's children, we estimate she married about 1790. From this, we guess her birth to be about 1770-1775. Thomas' second marriage is estimated to have taken place in the early 1770's. Since we have no date for the marriage, or for Verlinda's birth, it could be argued that she was the daughter of the second wife. I have placed her on my list by that estimated birth year, but nothing is cut in stone when there are so many unknown dates. I'm sorry I cannot be more exact.
