I know there is some pretty good history regarding the Galloway name. There is also a coat of arms to represent this family name. I have heard from those who claim Galloway was/is a "clan" and from some who say otherwise. What is accepted as truth or fact historically speaking? WJG

Dear Walter:

There is controversery over many of the Clans.
However, in this case of the Clan Galloway, there
is a couple of pretty significant points.
A: The Lord Lyon has accepted the Clan Galloway
as existing.

B: The staff at Rootsweb and I agreed to accept the
definitions at the Great Hall of Clans as being the
guidelines for us to create message boards and
mailing list. So for our situation the Clan exists.

Galloway is basically a lowland family. The
Clan system was really originally established to
maintain some kind of order in the Scottish Highlands.
So there are some that say that no lowland family
can be a Clan. And then the brawl begins :-)
