Surnames: Harding
Doea anyone know when the first orphanages began in Ar.?
And who ran them?

I am looking for one in Franklin co. Abt 1830-1855?
I believe my GGgrandfather John Harding of Davidson co.,Tn.,
may have ran something similar to one at his ranch in Franklin
county during those years.
He was a man of great importance at the time. A builder of
Plantations. He preferred to live more simply,so allowed his married children to live in them.
John had a farm in Crawford and Franklin counties. He may
have provided homes for babies whose Mother died in childbirth of his Harding family. And illicit children that he or other family members had out of wedlock.
John became obcessed with the redemption of his soul and sought out causes, such as the Christian or Campbell rel-
igions. He funded them.
Does anyone have any info about early orphanages in Ar.??

Dianne,
There was an orphanges at the Arkansas Childrens Hospital
in the 1900's cause my grandmother was in that one till she
got old enough to go out to work for other people. They tell
me that is was a wing off the Hospital but that is the only
orphanage that i know of in Ar. cause i have not been able
to fine my grandmother in any of the census while she was
there. the only census i believe she is in are the ones we can not get yet.
I hope i have helped you some i know it is frustrating to fine
an oprhan. I applaude your grandfather or greatgrandfather
whomever he was for giving other kids home to live in for
the reason he was put in an orphanages. He must have been
a real kind hearted man to do this.

Buster, Thank you for your reply, i found the one i was
looking for it was in Little Rock, at the Chilrens Hospital. I would like to know how to fine the names
of the children thru the census in the yrs that she
was there. i do know that she went there in 1915 and
was being adopted by a husband and wife and the wife
died and she went back cause the husband said he
could not take care of a little girl alone and so he took
her back and she stayed there till she was old enough
to put out for work. Then in 1927 she meet my grandfather and they married. She was in Havana Yell Co area then. Cause he was working in a sawmill there. Then they moved to Union Co in Smackover Ark
and stayed there till sometime in 1930 then moved back to where she was from in Manila, the northeastern part of Ark where her Adopted grandmother lived.
Than you again, for your reply appreciate it.
