I'm looking for anyone who has information regarding the Bodell (Bodel, Bodill) of Derbyshire. Are there still Bodell's living there today? Does anyone know anything about any kind of immigration to America? Does anyone know where the name came from, what it means?

Thanks so much.

Hi Sarah Jane,

I'm a descendant of Benjamin Bodell who lived in Derby and later in Belpher, in Derbyshire.
He had 2 marriages, and I've been told that some of the children of the first marriage went to America - I'm a descendant of the second marriage - my grandfather immigrated to New Zealand. If this is the family your looking for I'd be please to here from you.

My stepgrandmother Louisa, born 1891, told me her father was Henri Bodel(l) and had been born in France. Louisa had lived in Nottingham for most if not all of her life- not a million miles from Derbyshire is it? Do you think we can make a connection? I've always wondered when Henri had left France. She also told me that the boxer Jack Bodell was a cousin of hers. June

I have just found your details on the Ancestry site, and as I am trying to trace this family for my friend, I thought I would let you have the details that I have up to date.
My friend. Mary Webster's Father was George William Bodell, who was the son of Alfred Bodell, who in turn was the son of Benjamin Bodell, born 1814 or 1816. in Tamworth, married twice, and was a well known builder in Belper..I have details of the children etc.,He had Thomas, William, Sarah Ann to first marr, and Alfred, Ann & George to second. Interested in hearing from you.

Hello, just read your information on the Bodells. I've managed to trace my family roots (thanks to Ancestry) back to 1530 - Robert Bodell b Breedon on the Hill (Derby/Leic border)
Robert Bodell (jnr) b 1570 m Hellene Children Hellene and Edward
Edward Bodell b1599 -(four children: Paul 1624, Sam 1627, James 1632 and Dorothy 1634)
Paul Bodell b 1624 m Elizabeth - 1 child - Henry Bodell b 1663
Now this is where is gets interesting....
Henry married Lydia and had 7 children - two children were born in South Carolina USA. Henrydied in Ash Sharqirah in the Oman 1722. (thinking military)
There my link runs out as my ancestors follow the female line and I haven't got round to searching siblings yet.

All these Bodells were born in Breedon on the Hill or haughton (Staffs)or Belton (leics)- don't know if this helps at all

My Great Grandfather George Carey Bodell was born in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, England in March 1884. I am trying to contact local officials to see if they can track down the names of his Mother and Father. I have an Address in Derbyshire should you need it.

Just grasping at straws here but I am looking for Thomas Parr Bodell, born in 1819, Bailieborough, County Cavan, Ireland. It is believed that his forefathers came from France. Thomas, and perhaps 2 brothers and maybe a sister (Jane)left Ireland, by what transport is unknown. His name appears on no passenger lists coming in. Due to the place where he settled, Monroe, MI, he may have gone into Canada (where there are lots of Bodells) and crossed the border. There are no border crossing records for the time period that Thomas came to America. He arrived between 1840-45.
