My great grandfather-John Smyth was born in County Cavan Ireland in 1857. He came to Christchurch, New Zealand and married at age 25 another Irish immigrant-Bridget Rock, aged 23. They had 3 sons - Michael Edward,(30 Sep 1883) William John, Christopher.
His parents were Andrew Smyth-Margaret Cooney of County Cavan.
I am trying to get earlier information re his family and dates.
Would love to hear from anyone re this.

Regards-Brenda

I posted a message some time ago here, but gave my ggf's name as George, in fact his name was Frederick. What is odd is the new information I have found. He was born in Dublin but baptised in Cootehill, Co Cavan 1878, at the time his address was Carrickalvey, not sure if this is a house or place name. In 1881 he was given a letter of reference from a E. Cooney, I cant decipher the christian name, could be Edir, Eclin, Eclis or even Eclir. Frederick left for Liverpool shortly after this date. We know nothing of his siblings, he must have had some as large families where normal. His fathers name was Charles, he was a picture dealer/artist.
If any of this rings bells let me know.
Best wishes

Dear John
Many thanks for your reply. The information I have is contained only his New Zealand death certificate which reads. Death: John Edward Smyth born 1857 in County Cavan, died aged 68 on 5 July 1925 in Wellington NZ. Disease of the Heart. Fathers name: Andrew Smyth, Stoker. Mother: Margaret Smyth nee Cooney.
Married age 26 to Bridget Rock,(father-Bartholomew, farmer of Galway, mother Mary Geoghan) aged 19, assisted immigrant to Christchurch from Galway, Ireland in 1879. Bridget died in Wellington 13 Jan 1926. Had three sons-Michael, Christopher, William. Michael was my mother's father.
We know nothing about these two prior to their departure from Ireland. I am researching immigrant shipping and it may be she came out on the Waitangi-but there are 3 Bridget Rocks on three different ships! Still researching this.

Does this give you any clues to your Cooneys?

Please keep in touch

Hello Brenda, thanks for your reply, it does not fit in with anything I have...YET! but it is early days. I do not know of any siblings of my ggf Frederick Smyth, but feel sure he had some. The only bit that I do know is that Frederick's father was called Charles, but did he have brothers? I will keep in touch and let you know if anything crops up.
Best wishes
John
