Beverly, it looks like you have a connection to the Swearingens in Missouri. So do I, and I wanted to give you my family's information to see if we are connected. Elizabeth Swearingen was born on July 16, 1868 in Missouri. According to her death certificate, her father was John Swearingen who was born in Missouri and her mother was Mary (maiden name unknown, birthplace unknown). The 1900 Young County, Texas census shows that Lizzie's father was born in Tennessee. I don't know if Tennessee or Missouri is correct for his birthplace. Lizzie married Edward Clayton (born Dec. 14, 1859 in Illinois). They were married in either 1888 or 1889. I don't know where they married. I would guess it was in Missouri or Texas. Lizzie and Ed Clayton had 4 children: Carrie (born Jan. 16, 1890 in TX, died as Carrie Jones April 16, 1965 in CA), Calvin C. (or "C.C.", born Oct. 28, 1891 in TX, died Dec. 18, 1948 in CA), Albert Clayton, who was my great, great grandfather (born March 2, 1893 in TX, died May 25, 1955 in AR), and Alvie Clayton (born Dec. 14, 1905 in TX, died Feb. 7, 1986 in CA). I wonder if Ed and Lizzie got married in Texas since their first child was born there in the same year (or one year after) they were married. Ed died in February 1923 in Durwood, Oklahoma and is buried in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Lizzie went to California around 1932. (Some of her children also moved to California.) She moved to Bakersfield, Kern County, California around 1941. She spent the last month of her life at Kern General Hospital before dying of pneumonia. Lizzie is buried at Greenlawn in Bakersfield. If you have any information on this family, please email me at pattyt@ipa.net. Thanks so much! Patty

Beverly,
I do not have a birth year for John Swearingen. I only know he was born in Missouri (according to his daughter's funeral record) or Tennessee (according to his daughter's death certificate). And his wife was listed as Mary on Lizzie's (his daughter's) death certificate. I wish I knew more information to tell you. Thanks so much for checking your files. I really appreciate it. My email address is pattyt@ipa.net. Thanks again! Patty

Your John B. Swearingen was listed on the 1885 Jasper Co. Elk Creek Twsp.census age 32 farmer, born in W.V., wife Matilda age 27,born in Jasper Co.IA.,children were Hattie A. age 3, born in Jasper Co.IA.and Rachel E. age 1 also born in Jasper Co IA.

On this 1885 census they lived in the same twsp. as Leonard Swearingen, his wife Selencia and their 7 children.
Hope this helps!

Your address is now invalid, so if you are still looking for Lizzie's family here is what I found:
Believe they were in Howard Co MO in 1870 and 1880 at least. She was apparently the d/o James/John or J C Swearingen and Mary Elizabeth Chipley.
