I am trying to find information on my grandmothers family. Her name was Margaret Flanagan. born approximately 1880. She had a brother Pat and both immigrated to NYC. I belive that she had about 10 other siblings and the family lived in Ballygar. Any information that anyone has would be greatly appreciated Kevin carroll

You will need to wait for a personal connection I can only help with the research.

In Ireland there a few resources like census before 1901/11
Griffith Valuation is used for a census substitute .

There were 179 Flanagan's in Galway, only 2 in the Parish of Killeroran.

Ballygar is a Town and a townland in the Parish of Killeroran in the Poor Law Union Mountbellow. A Union covered an area of 12 mi.and included parish's, towns/villages and townlands.

There is only 1 Flanagan family in the Parish of Killeroran
at the time of the Griffith Valuation.

Peter Flanagan, Parish of Killeroran, Townland Kilmore
PLU Mountbellow tenant of Denis H. Kelly

#12A house, outbuildings and land 5.0.27
B land 2 acres 1 roods 28 perches
C land 4.1.3
D land 10.2.36
E land 0.2.20

Directories are another way of finding people:

1870 Peter Flanagan, Bookseller & seedsman, Shop St.
(no way to tell if related)
..........................................................
Depending on when Margaret and Pat left Ireland would determine which of these are their family. In the 1901 & 1911 Census:

Civil Registrations (1864 to 1940's) on www.familysearch.org

Peter Flanegan born 3 Dec 1873 Killeroran, Galway
Fa: Michael Flanegan Mo: Maria Loghan

This is the only child to this couple within the parameters of the CD I have 1865-1875

Mary Flanegan born 19 Sept 1871 #430 Killeroran
Fa: James Flanegan Mo: Catherine Loftus

This is the only child to this couple within the parameters
of the CD starting 1865-1875. With so many children I'm surprised these would be so spead out.

Any birth from 1864 you can get a copy of a birth certificate: www.groireland.ie

Surnames: Flanagan
My great-granduncle Malachy Flanagan with his wife Kate and family emigrated from the Ballygar area via Queenstown, to New York in 1897, Names of children-
Mary,Michael,Patrick,Martin,John,Bernard, Kate, Francis,James, Margaret,Janie. They are recorded in the 12th. Census of the U.S. 1900, living in Manhattan, 1st Av.between 30th and 31st St.
The hand written record of his name is almost illegible and is incorrect, recorded as Michael Flannigan. In the 1910 Census, only Malachy, Kate and 2 on the children are recorded, living at Home St. Queens, the others had moved on. Hope this may be helpful.

Thanks for the info. The names are so similar. I know some of my grandmothers siblings, Mary, Bridget, Patrick, Peter, Michael, Bernard and I think there were two others. The only two that I know that immigrated to the US was Pat and Margaret. She in 1915, He in 1911. Kevin Carroll
