Anchorage Daily News (AK) — Saturday, June 29, 1996
Anchorage resident Hazel Louise Carson Hardwick, 82, died June 24, 1996, at Columbia Alaska Regional Hospital.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Health Care Bridges adult homes, 2521 Tradewind Drive, with Chaplain Bert McQueen officiating.

Mrs. Hardwick was born Nov. 27, 1913, in McCrory, Ark., to Katie and Robert Carson. She graduated from Union City High School in Union City, N.J. She married Timothy Dwight Hardwick on July 11, 1938, in Flushing, N.Y. He died in November 1942 in World War II.

Mrs. Hardwick joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944 and served in Cherry Point, N.C., until her honorable discharge in 1946. From 1946 until 1948 she worked for the Otis Elevator Co. in New York. She went to college on the GI bill in 1949 and received her bachelor's' degree from the State University of New York at Cortland and her master's degree from Teachers College at Columbia University, New York. Mrs. Hardwick was a teacher in the Syosset School District in Long Island, N.Y., from 1953 until her retirement in 1973.

After she retired she moved to Anchorage and was a member of First Assembly of God, Women's Day Aglow and the Women's Marine Corps Reserve. She enjoyed dogs, crossword puzzles, card games and gospel music.

Friends said: ''Hazel's world revolved around the many friends she made throughout the years. She savored a good cup of coffee, a daily dose of ice cream, and never passed up an opportunity to eat pancakes with bacon. Hazel adored babies and sunshine and always enjoyed a good laugh.''

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings. Mrs. Hardwick is survived by her nieces and nephews who reside on the East Coast.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Alaska Humane Society, P.O. Box 103567, Anchorage 99510 or the Anchorage Women's Day Aglow, 5301 Bishop Castle Circle, Anchorage 99516. Arrangements were handled by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
