She had 2 sisters who came to America Maria (Mary O'Connell) Ryan died in 1930s and Catherine (O'Connell)Mc Grath died 1909.She had 2 brothers who immigrated Martin O'Connell died 1915 and Phillip O'Connell died 1942. He was accidently hit by a subway train. Stephen Brett's Mother was Ellen Cody. The family is still in Mullinahone and the descendents of one of his siblings owns the Stack of Barley and Brett's Hardware. Does anyone know anything about the Brett and O'Connell family that remained in Ireland? I am Stephen Brett's grandaughter. Thanks

Hello cabrett.

I’m not a descendant of the Brett and O’Connell families, but found information about both families at the Latter Day Saints (LDS) free website at: https://www.familysearch.org/#form=advanced-records

For example below is the marriage index for Stephen Brett and Maggie O’Connell showing they were married in Manhattan, New York on 27 February 1898. The index shows Stephen’s parents were John (Brett) and Ellen Cody. Maggie’s parents were Patrick (O’Connell) and Mary Comeford.

The index follows:

The marriage record for Stephen and Maggie can be found on LDS microfilm number 1503842. You can order this film from your local Family History Center.

With the information from the marriage index, I next found the LDS birth index for Stephen “Britt” and seven of his siblings. These are civil birth indexes recorded in County Tipperary, Ireland. The names of the children and their years of birth are: James (1864); John (1866); William (1868); Bridget (1870); Nicholas (1872); Stephen (1874); Thomas (1876); and Ellen (1879).

The indexes for all the children except Thomas and Ellen list Mullinahone as the place of birth. The index for Thomas only references Tipperary as his place of birth, while the index for Ellen shows that she was born in “Poolacopple,” Tipperary. Poulacapple is located just northeast of the center of Mullinahone.

All the birth indexes are accompanied by LDS microfilms.

Britt would be an alternate spelling for Brett.

All eight microfilms can be ordered from your nearest Family History Center. If you do not have a Family History Center nearby, you can alternatively order the birth records for the “Britt” children by mail from the General Register Office (GRO) in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon. For information about birth, marriage, and death certificates, application forms, and costs for certificates, go to the GRO website at: www.groireland.ie/

Next I went to the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website for County Tipperary South, to see if I could also find the birth indexes as well as the baptism indexes for children of John Brett and Ellen Cody. At this website I uncovered 10 birth indexes for the children, whose surname was also spelled as “Britt.” Unfortunately it doesn’t appear that the IFHF has recorded church records of baptisms and marriages for Mullinahone to date.

The IFHF birth indexes differ somewhat that the LDS indexes you saw earlier. The LDS website had shown that James Britt was born in 1864, while the IFHF index below shows that Patrick Britt was born in 1864. I’m not sure which is correct. Also the LDS website did not list two other children of John Britt and Ellen Cody that the IFHF website does, as you’ll see below.

The names and dates of birth for the Britt children at the IFHF website are: Patrick (1864); John (1866); William (1868); Bridget (1870); Nicholas (1872); Stephen (1874); Thomas (1876); Ellen (1879); James (1882); and Catherine (1887).

The baptisms for Patrick and Catherine were not found in the LDS birth indexes.

The IFHF homepage can be found at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Before accessing indexes at the IFHF you’ll first have to register. Registration is free. You’ll also be able to access the baptism indexes for the Britt children that I did for free, but you will be charged to obtain transcriptions of the births from the IFHF. You’ll have to purchase credits with a credit card to obtain the transcriptions. Once credit card payment is made the birth transcriptions will be sent to your computer, so that you don’t have to wait for them. The IFHF website will have more information about purchasing credits for baptism, as well as birth, marriage, and death or burial transcriptions.

As you saw above there are 10 birth indexes for the Britt children. But the IFHF allows you to order the 10 birth transcfriptions from one index. To do this, do not include the first names of the children in the search. Instead of first names use the % sign as a wild card. Also do not include their years of birth.

The search engine form will look like this:

I next looked for but didn’t find the church marriage record or the civil marriage record for John Brett/Britt at the IFHF. If they were Catholic and were married before 1864 there will not be a marriage record for them. Civil registration in Ireland commenced in 1845 when the government began to record Protestant marriages only. Civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths for all religious denominations began in Ireland in 1864. This means if John Brett and Ellen Cody had any children before 1864, there won’t be birth records for them. But there may be baptism records for children born before 1864 in the Mullinahone Catholic Church.

When the Brett family lived in County Tipperary, Mullinahone was situated in the Civil Parish of Kilvemnon. Along with Mullinahone several other townlands were also located in the Civil Parish of Kilvemnon. Information at the IFHF website shows that no Catholic Church registers have been indexed or transcribed to date for any towns in the Civil Parish of Kilvemnon.

This doesn’t mean however that registers of baptisms and marriages for the Mullinahone Catholic Church do not exit. Information from the Irish Times genealogical website shows that baptisms and marriages for the Mullinahone Catholic Church begin in 1809-1810. See: http://tinyurl.com/cx76q6e

The name of the Catholic Church in Mullinahone is St. Michael’s.

Today a non-profit organization called Tipperary Excel holds church records for South Tipperary. Tipperary Excel will search church records for you on a commissioned basis. For more information about Tipperary Excel, and obtaining church registers of baptism and marriage, go to the following links:

The importance of Catholic Church marriage and baptism records is that they often provide the names of the witnesses to the marriage, as well as the names of the sponsors or godparents to the children being baptized. Witnesses and godparents are often related, or were good friends of the family.

I didn’t find a civil marriage record for John Brett and Ellen Cody, which means they were likely married before 1864. They would have also been born and baptized before 1864. If they were baptized and later married in Mullinahone, the church registers for St. Michael’s may have recorded their baptisms and their marriage, and perhaps even the marriages of their parents.

You can see the location of the Catholic parish of Mullinahone on a Catholic parish map for Tipperary South at the Irish Times link at: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/ti...

On the map you’ll see that Mullinahone is situated in eastern Tipperary South, on the County Kilkenny border.

Next I wanted to see if I could find John and Ellen Brett/Britt in the 1901 census of Ireland at the National Archives of Ireland website link at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

I located the Brett family in the 1901 census, which shows that 61 year old Ellen is a widow with three of her children in the household. The address is House Number 6, Mullinahone, Tipperary. The census shows that Ellen was Roman Catholic and born in County Tipperary. Her occupation is provision dealer. The census also shows she can read and write.

The oldest child in the household is 23 year old Thomas Brett, who is also listed as a provision dealer. He is followed by 20 year old Ellen, a shop assistant. The youngest child in the household is 13 year old Catherine, who is attending school. All the children were born in Tipperary. Also in the household is a servant, 25 year old William Coady. He is single and shown to be from County Tipperary. He may have been related to the older Ellen Brett, as Ellen’s maiden name was Cody. The household also includes another servant named Mary McCormack, 22 years old. The last person named in the census is 17 year old Mary Cahill, whose occupation is barmaid. If Mary Cahill was employed by Ellen Brett then it would appear that Ellen sold not only provisions, but also ran a pub. You had mentioned in your post to Anncestry.com that descendants of the Bretts own a business in Mullinahone called the Stack of Barley. Information I discovered online shows the Stack of Barley is a pub, with Brett’s Hardware store across the street.

A transcription of the 1901 census from the National Archives is below:

To view a copy of the original 1901 census for Ellen Brett and her household, go to the National Archives of Ireland link at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003889024/

Along with a copy of the original census the National Archives has also digitized a form that is known as a House and Building Return. This form shows if the person in the enumeration lived in a private dwelling or operated a business, such as a boarding house, public house, hotel, etc. The form shows that Ellen Brett at House Number 6 was operating a “Meal Store.” See the following link for the House and Building Return form for Ellen Brett:

Also in the 1901 census is 28 year old Patrick and his wife 21 year old Kate Brett, living in an address of House Number 1, Mullinahone. Patrick and Kate are both listed as shop keepers. Both were born in County Tipperary, were Roman Catholic, and could read and write. Patrick may have been the son of John Brett and Ellen Cody, but I can’t be sure of that:

The youngest child that I located for John and Ellen Brett was their daughter Catherine. As you saw earlier at the IFHF website, Catherine’s birth was recorded in Mullinahone, Tipperary South in 1887. This means her father John would have died sometime between 1887 and the 1901 census. I went back to the IFHF website to see if I could find a death index for a John Brett between the years 1887 and 1901 recorded in Mullinahone. I found one index which may pertain to him. This shows the death of a John “Britt” taking place in 1893. The index follows:

1 match for the search criteria: Britt (plus variants) John 1893 Parish: MULLINAHONE (CP)

Record Type: Burial/Death Records for County Tipperary (South)
Surname: Britt

I also found the death index for John Britt at the Ancestry.com website. This index shows John’s death recorded in the Callan Registration District for the December quarter of 1893. Mullinahone was situated within the Callan Registration District, where births, marriages, and deaths were recorded under Civil Registration for this portion of County Tipperary South. The Ancestry.com death index gives John’s age at death as 57.

The index is below:

I don’t know if the death indexes for John Britt you see above pertain to Ellen’s husband and the father of your Stephen Brett. If you order the death transcription for John, see who is listed as the informant to the death, as the informant could be his wife or one of his adult children.

Next I looked for Ellen Brett in the 1911 census in Mullinahone, but didn’t find her. I figured that by 1911 she may have been deceased, and so I looked for her death index at the IFHF website for County Tipperary South. I found one index which may pertain to her, showing that the death of an Ellen “Britt” was recorded in Mullinahone in 1908.

The index follows:

1 match for the search criteria: Brett (plus variants) Ellen 1908 Parish: MULLINAHONE (CP)

Record Type: Burial/Death Records for County Tipperary (South)
Surname: Britt
First Name: Ellen

Year: 1908

____

I also found the 1908 death index for Ellen Brett at Ancestry.com. But this index shows that at the time of death Ellen was 25 years old, and so this index, nor the index above from the IFHF website, could not be for your Stephen Brett’s mother.

The Ancestry.com index follows:

This is an indication that your Ellen Brett/Britt was not counted in the 1911 census, and so, continuing with the death indexes at Ancestry.com, I looked for the death of Ellen Brett/Britt between the years 1911 and 1921, recorded in the Callan Registration District.

I found two death indexes for an Ellen Brett at Ancestry.com. The first shows the death recorded in the Callan Registration District for the March quarter of 1915, when Ellen was 77 years old.. The second index shows the death of an Ellen Brett recorded in the Callan Registration District for the December quarter of 1917, when Ellen was 75 years old. One of these death indexes may pertain to your Stephen Brett’s mother, thoygh I can’t be sure that either of them does:

I now wanted to see if I could locate the marriage indexes for any of the children of John and Ellen Brett recorded in Mullinahone. Civil marriage records from this time period provide the names of the fathers of the groom and bride, but unfortunately, not the names of the mothers.

To look for marriages I sometimes use a combination of websites, such as the subscription-based Ancestry.com as well as the IFHF website.

For example I located the following Ancestgry.com marriage index for a Bridget Brett showing that her marriage was recorded in the Callan (Tipperary) Registration District for the February quarter of 1897. The index also lists several other individuals whose marriages were recorded in the Callan Registration District for the February quarter of 1897. If you recall, the IFHF index seen earlier had shown that Bridget “Britt,” daughter of John Britt and Ellen Cody, was born in Mullinahone in 1870.

The marriage index for Bridget Brett, from Ancestry.com, follows:

Bridget Brett would have married one of the men named in the index above. I then went to the IFHF to see if the marriage was indexed and to also see if the search engine accepted any of the mens’ names listed above, as her husband. In addition, I also wanted to see if the search engine accepted John as the first name of Bridget’s father. The results below shows that Bridget Brett and Michael Gardiner were married in Mullinahone in 1897. The search engine accepted John as Bridget’s father:

I also used the combination of Ancestry.com and the IFHF to locate the marriage indexes for Mary Brett, who married Thomas Moloney in 1900; for William Brett, who married Bridget Tobin in 1905; and for John Brett, who married Susan Bowers in 1909. The IFHF indexes show the father of these Bretts was John. And so, these Brett’s may also have been the children of John Brett and Ellen Cody.

I looked for, but couldn’t identify Thomas and Mary Moloney in the 1901 and 1911 census enumerations for Mullinahone and Poulacapple West and East. But I found what I believe are the 1911 census enumerations for William and Bridget Brett and John and Susan Brett and their respective children. These families were living in close proximity to each other.

The 1911 census for 40 year old William and 36 year old Bridget Brett, show the family living in House Number 21 Poulacapple West, Kilvemnon. The census shows that William is a farmer. He, his wife Bridget and their three children were born in County Tipperary. The census also shows that Bridget and William were married for 6 years as of 1911 and in that time had three children, with all three children living. These children are 4 year old Elena; 3 year old John; and 2 year old Bridie. Also in the household with William and Bridget Brett and their children is William’s aunt, whose first name is listed as Allen, and last name as Brett. Allen is how the name also appears in a copy of the original 1911 census. Her name may have been Ellen. She may have been the sister of William’s father John. Her age of 70 in 1911 places her year of birth circa 1841. Also in the household are two farm servants, 28 year old Charles Kickham and 28 year old Mary Purcell. Both Charles and Mary were born in County Tipperary.

The 1911 census transcription for the Brett family is below:

Next I found the IFHF birth indexes for all three children of William and Bridget Brett. However, the search engine for children John and Bridget would not accept the spelling of Bridget as the first name of their mother, but did accept the shortened version of Bride.

The indexes follow:

Next, the 1911 census for John and Susan Brett shows them living in House Number 4 Poulacapple West, Kilvemnon.
John is listed as a 38 year old farmer born in County Tipperary. His wife Susan is 28 years old and also born in Tipperary. The census shows that John and Susan have been married for 1 year as of 1911 and in that time had one child. This child is Nora, but the transcription doesn’t give her age. You will have to go to a copy of the original census to see that Nora is 8 months old.

The 1911 census for the family of John and Susan Brett follows:

1911 Census of ireland

Residents of a house 4 in Poulacapple West (Kilvemnon, Tipperary)

Surname Forename Age Sex Relation to head Religion Birthplace Occupation Literacy Irish Language

____

A copy of the original 1911 census for John, Susan, and Nora Brett can be found at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003367684/

The copy of the original census also shows that John Brett was born in Poulacapple.

I then looked for Nora’s birth index at the IFHF website for Tipperary South. Initially I couldn’t find her birth index, as the search engine did not accept the spelling Nora, Honor, Honora, Honoria, Hanna, Hannah, Hanora, Hanoria, Nan, etc. Nor did the search engine accept the spelling of Susan for her mother’s first name. After a time I tried the alternate version of the name Suzan for the mother, and the search engine accepted this.

At this time I expended a credit to find out what the search engine was calling for as to the alternate spelling of Nora’s first name. The result the search engine was looking for was Hanova, a variant of Nora, Hanna, etc. I had never seen this variant spelling of the name before after hundreds of searches at the IFHF over the course of several years.

The birth index below shows that Hanova Brett’s birth was recorded in Mullinahone in 1910. Her parents are listed as John Brett and Suzan Bowers:

1 match for the search criteria: Brett (plus variants) Hanova 1910 Parish: MULLINAHONE (CP)

I uncovered yet another birth index at the IFHF. This is for Bridget Brett, recorded in Mullinahone in 1914. The search engine for this index accepted the spelling of Bridget’s mother as Susan Bowes, rather than Suzan Bowers:

GRIFFITHS VALUATION

Next I wanted to see if I could find any Bretts/Britts in an Irish property tax record known as Griffiths Valuation. Griffiths Valuation was enumerated in the 32 counties of Ireland between 1847 and 1864. The valuation for the Civil Parish of Kilvemnon, in which Mullinahone was located, was completed by the year 1850.

Unlike a census, Griffiths Valuation did not enumerate family members. Those named in the valuation were the people who leased property. Each person who paid to lease the property was called an “Occupier.” The other person listed in Griffiths Valuation was the person who owned the property, or who worked as the middleman for the owner. This person was called the “Immediate Lessor.”

You can access Griffiths Valuation transcriptions and original copies for free at the askaboutireland website link at: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

I found the Griffiths Valuation entries for two men named John “Britt” leasing houses in a section of Mullinahone called Killaghy. These entries may actually pertain to the same John Britt, even though he may not have lived in one of the houses, as Griffiths Valuation enumerated the person who paid for the lease on the house, even if he didn’t live in it.

Both entries show that John Britt leased property in two separate locations on Killaghy Street in Mullinahone.

I’ve transcribed the first of these Griffiths Valuation entries for John Britt, as follows:

No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 21
Civil Parish: Kilvemnon
Townland: Killaghy, Village of Mullinahone
Street: Killaghy-Street
Occupier: John Britt
Immediate Lessor: William Despard, Esq.
Description of Tenement: House and sm. garden
Area of Land: - Acres, - Roods, - Perches
Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: -
Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: 1 Pound, 5 Shillings
Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Property: 1 Pounds, 5 Shillings
____

Griffiths Valuation shows that John Britt leased a house and a small garden from an Immediate Lessor named William Despard. His house was valued 1 Pound and 5 Shillings. He would not have paid a tax on this property as only those leaseholds valued at over 5 Pounds were taxed a percentage of the value.

The map number at the top of the valuation entry (No. 21) refers to an Ordnance Survey Map from the time period noting where John Britt’s leasehold was situated in the Village of Mullinahone, though on some of these old Ordnance Survey Maps it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact locations of a person’s lease.

You can access the Ordnance Survey Map for Killaghy, Mullinahone, from the Griffiths Valuation index for John Britt. This map overlays a modern map of Killaghy, Mullinahone so that you can see the same roads and some landmarks that still exist over 160 years after Griffiths Valuation was enumerated in the area.

The second listing for John Britt in Griffiths Valuation shows he leased a house and small garden at Map No. 31, Killaghy Street, from William Despard. This house was valued at 15 Shillings, whereas in the previous entry, the house was valued at 1 Pound and 5 Shillings. This second house was probably smaller, hence the value on it wasn’t as high:

No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 31

I also found an entry for a John Britt in Griffiths Valuation in the townland of Poulacapple, Civil Parish of Kilvemnon. Earlier, you saw the LDS birth index for Ellen Britt, whose 1879 birth was recorded in “Poolacople” Tipperary. This would be the same place as Poulacapple in the Griffiths Valuation entry below for John Britt:

No. and Letters of Reference to Map: 44 ABaC
Civil Parish: Kilvemnon
Townland: Poulacapple, West
Occupier: John Britt
Immediate Lessor: Reps. J. Stephens Esq.
Description of Tenement: House and land

Rateable Annual Valuation of Land: 9 Pounds
Rateable Annual Valuation of Buildings: 10 Shillings
Total Annual Valuation of Rateable Property: 9 Pounds, 10 Shillings
____

Griffiths Valuation above shows that John Britt leased over 10 acres of land and a house from the Reps (Representatives) of J. Stephens. The word “Representatives” indicates that J. Stephens is deceased and that his property is being looked after by other interests, perhaps members of his family. The land that John Britt leased was valued at 9 Pounds, while his house was valued at 10 Shillings. The total valuation for John’s property was 9 Pounds and 10 Shillings. He would have paid a percentage of the value toward taxes, as the total value was over 5 Pounds.

Enumerated just after John Britt is William Britt, Jr., who also leased land and a house from the Reps. of J. Stephens. The total valuation for William’s property was 8 Pounds and 5 Shillings:

If you access the indexes for the Britt surname in Kilvemnon, you’ll see other entries for the name in various other townlands in the parish.

Indexes also show that Codys were enumerated in Griffiths Valuation for Mullinahone as well as Poulacopple West and Poulacopple East.

For example, below is the Griffiths Valuation entry for William Cody at Map Reference No. 36, which shows he leased a house and yard on Carrick Street, Village of Mullinahone from a lady named Catherine Mockler. The house was valued at 3 Pounds:

THE TITHE APPLOTMENT BOOKS

I found that men named Daniel and John Britt were leasing property in Killaghy, Mullinahone, and that a James Britt was leasing property in the townland of West Poulacopple, in an even older property tax record known as the Tithe Applotment Books. These entries were found at the National Archives of Ireland link at:
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/h...

The link above and the following link will give you more information about the Tithe Applotment Books:
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/a...

The index page for the three Britt men enumerated in the Tithe Applotment Books, dated 1834, can be found at:
http://tinyurl.com/bdbjer8

The names of the Britts are highlighted in blue. Left-click on any of the names and a copy of the original Tithe Applotment Book entry for that person will appear.

When you download a copy of the Tithe Applotment Books for James Britt, you’ll also see that Thomas and John Cody were leasing property in West Poulacopple. The Britts and the Codys in the Tithe Applotment Books were likely related to your John Britt and Ellen Cody.

The Tithe Applotment Books indexes show four Codys enumerated in the Civil parish of Kilvemnon in 1834. In addition to Thomas and John Cody in West Poulacopple, a Patrick Cody leased property in the townland of Clonagoose, as well as the townland of East Poulacopple. THE O’CONNELL FAMILY

Thanks to the 1898 New York marriage index for Stephen Brett and Maggie O’Connell found at the LDS website, I knew that Maggie’s/Margaret’s parents were Patrick O’Connell and Mary Comeford. With this information I looked for Margaret’s birth index at the LDS website, as well as the birth indexes for her siblings. I located five birth indexes for children of Patrick “Connell” and Mary “Comerford” at the LDS website. These children are: Richard (1865); Martin (1869); Margaret (1871); Charles (1875); and Anastatia (1880). I didn’t find the birth indexes for Mary, Catherine, or Phillip Connell at the LDS website.

The indexes for all the children except Charles show the births were recorded in Mullinahone, Tipperary. The birth index for Charles just gives his place of birth as Tipperary, Ireland. All of the indexes are accompanied by LDS microfilm numbers. The births of each child can be found on these microfilms, which you can order from the Family History Center, or from the GRO in Roscommon Town, County Roscommon.

I also looked for the birth indexes for the O’Connell/Connell children at the IFHF website for Mullinahone, Tipperary South. I located 7 birth indexes. Two of these indexes are for the births of Maria (1873), and Catherine (1877). The other five are for Richard, Martin Margaret, Charles, and Anastatia. I didn’t locate a birth index for Phillip.

The IFHF search engine will accept the spelling of the last name of the children as either O’Connell or Connell. If you order the transcriptions for the births, you may see the exact spelling of their last name is Connell, and their mother’s maiden name Comerford, though the search engine will also accept Comeford.

At this point in the research I wasn’t satisfied that I had tried everything to uncover the birth index for Patrick and Mary’s son, Philip O’Connell. Normally, the IFHF does a very good job with alternate surname spellings. But in some instances, it does not. I had a suspicion that I couldn’t find the birth index for Philip because of the way I was spelling his mother’s maiden name, Comerford or Comeford. And so I tried variant spellings of the name, and finally came up with Cumerford and Cumeford. The IFHF search engine accepted either spelling of the maiden name for Philip’s mother Mary.

The index below shows that Philip was born in Mullinahone in 1883:

Next I looked for Patrick and Mary O’Connell/Connel and children in the 1901 census. I found the O’Connells in the census living in an address of House Number 6, Fethard Street, Mullinahone. The census shows that Patrick is a 58 year old shoemaker born in County Tipperary. He is Roman Catholic, as are all his family, and he could read and write, as could all his family. His 56 year old Tipperary-born wife Mary is listed as a shoemaker’s wife. The two children in the household, both shoemakers, are 35 year old Richard and 16 year old Philip, both born in County Tipperary.

The 1901 census transcription from the National Archives of Ireland website is below:

Next I found a 19 year old Stasia O’Connell in the 1901 census living in the household of a 36 year old widow named Ellen Mary Redmond, in an address of House Number 2, Mullinahone. Stasia may be the daughter of Patrick and Mary O’Connell. Her occupation is domestic servant. Ellen Mary Redmond is listed as being a grocer and spirit merchant. She may have been related to the O’Connell family, but that is just a guess. Ellen has three of her own children in the household with her, including 9 year old Nora M.; 8 year old Patrick J., and 2 year old Denis A. Redmond. Also in the household is an 18 year old clerk and bartender named Bridget Brennan, who was born in County Kilkenny:

I also found a 24 year old Charles O’Connell employed as a servant in the household of 50 year old Farmer William O’Connor at an address of House Number 2, Mullinoly, Mullinahone, Tipperary. Charles may be the son of Patrick and Mary Comerford O’Connell. Also in the household is William O’Connor’s sister, 33 year old Johanna O’Connor. All in the household are shown to be single:

I then looked for Patrick and Mary O’Connell in the 1911 census of Ireland but didn’t find them. It’s possible they were not enumerated in the 1911 census, or they may have died before the 1911 census was taken. I looked for the death indexes of Patrick and Mary O’Connell at Ancestry.com and found one possibility for Patrick. This index shows the death of a Patrick Connell recorded in the Callan, Tipperary Registration District for the December quarter of 1908. At the time of death Patrick was 72 years old, placing his year of birth circa 1836.

The Ancestry.com death index for Patrick Connell is below:

I also found the IFHF death index for Patrick Connell, showing his death recorded in Mullinhone in 1908. If you recall, Mullinahone was situated within the Callan Registration District, which means both the Ancestry.com death index, and the IFHF death index, pertain to the same Patrick Connell:

I didn’t find a death index for Mary O’Connell/Connell at either Ancestry.com or the IFHF website for County Tipperary South. She may have died in a location outside of the Mullinahone and the Callan Registration District.

But I did find once again find the person I believe to have been Patrick and Mary’s son Charles in the 1911 census. The census shows that 34 year old Charles Connell, his 26 year old wife Alice, and their two children, 2 year old Mary and 5 month old Kathleen were living in House Number 8, Killaghy, Mullinahone, Tipperary. Charles is shown to be an agricultural labourer. The census also shows that he and his wife Alice had been married for 3 years as of 1911, and in that time period had two children, with both children still living. These children are 2 year old Mary and 5 month old Kathleen. Also in the household are four boarders. These are 49 year old agricultural labourer Patrick Hackett; 45 year old agricultural labourer and widower, Richard Bennett; 43 year old baker James Hayes; and 73 year old agricultural labourer Thomas Ryan. All residents of the Connell household were Roman Catholic and all except Thomas Ryan were born in County Tipperary. Thomas Ryan was born in County Kilkenny.

The 1911 census transcription is below:

I then wanted to see if I could find the Mullinahone civil marriage index for Charles O’Connell/Connell and Alice. I looked for their marriage index at the IFHF website without first knowing what Alice’s maiden name was. I would look for her maiden name if I found their marriage index at the IFHF website. In the marriage index I wanted to see if the search engine would accept Patrick O’Connell or Patrick Connell as Charles’s father. Civil marriage records from this time did not traditionally record the names of the mother of the groom and bride.

I located the index showing that Charles O’Connell and Alice were married in Mullinahone in 1908. The IFHF search engine did accept Patrick O’Connell as Charles’s father.

The index follows:

1 match for the search criteria: O'Connell (plus variants) Charles 1908 Parish: MULLINAHONE (CP)

Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Tipperary (South)

____

Now I wanted to see if I could learn what Alice’s maiden name was without having to expend any free credits I had accumulated from prior search results at the IFHF. To do this I went back to the 1901 census for Mullinahone and surrounding villages, to see what girls named Alice may have been enumerated at that time. In the 1911 census Alice’s age is 26, though I don’t always trust ages in these census returns, as they are very often inaccurate. And so I looked for anyone named Alice in the 1901 census for Mullinahone between the ages of 15 and 25. Five girls named Alice are listed in the census between these age ranges. These are 23 year old Alice OConnor; 23 year old Alice Hackett; 23 year old Alice Hennessy; 19 year old Alice OShea; and 16 year old Mary Alice Frost. You can see this list of names at:
http://tinyurl.com/apojhqe

I then went back to the IFHF marriage search engine to see if any of these last names for the girls named Alice in the 1901 census, were accepted by the search engine as her maiden name. The search engine accepted OShea as Alice’s maiden name. Thus Charles O’Connell married Alice O’Shea in Mullinahone in 1908. The revised marriage index is below:

1 match for the search criteria: O'Connell (plus variants) Charles 1908 Parish: MULLINAHONE (CP)

Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Tipperary (South)

Father's First Name: Patrick
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name:

____

Then, with Alice O’Shea as the primary partner in the marriage index, I wanted to see if I could guess what her father’s first name was. I went through several common Irish male first names such as Patrick, John, James, etc. Finally, the search engine accepted Jeremiah as the first name of Alice’s father:

The 1911 census shows that Charles and Alice Connell have two children in the household with them. These are 2 year old Mary and 5 month old Kathleen. I looked for the birth for Mary and Kathleen at the IFHF but didn’t find their births recorded in Mullinahone, nor in any other Tipperary South location. There is always the possibility I missed finding their birth indexes. But I did uncover the civil registration birth indexes for two other children of Charles O’Connell and Alice O’Shea. These indexes for the births of Anastasia (1917); and Jeremiah (1920) Their births were recorded in Mullinahone:

I also found the marriage indexes for an Anastasia O’Connell at the Ancestry.com and IFHF websites. The IFHF marriage index shows Anastasia’s father was Patrick, and so this Anastasia may have been the daughter of Patrick O’Connell and Mary Comerford. Anastasia married Richard Duncan in Mullinahone in 1912.

I then uncovered the Mullinahone birth index for five children of Richard Duncan and Stasia/Statia O’Connell. These children are: Bridget (1913); Michael (1915); Mary (1916); Patrick (1918); and Bridget (1921).

As you can see there are two births for Bridget Duncan. This indicates the first-born Bridget had died. In the indexes below the mother’s first name for the births of Bridget, Michael, and Mary is spelled Statia. The IFHF search engine did not accept the spelling Statia in the birth indexes for Patrick and the second-born Bridget, but did accept the spelling Stasia.

At this point in the research I wanted to see if I could find any O’Connell/Connell individuals in Griffiths Valuation living in Mullinahone, Killaghy, or Poulacapple West and East, Civil Parish of Kilvemnon, County Tipperary. I didn’t find O’Connells or Connells in these locations, but did uncover an Edmund and Mary Connell leasing property in the townland of Ballycullen, Civil parish of Kilvemnon. I don’t know if Edmund and Mary Connell were related to Patrick Connell’s family. But, you can view the Griffiths valuation entry for both Edmund and Mary at the Ask About Ireland website link for Griffiths Valuation.

I also looked for any Comerfords in Griffiths Valuation for the Mullinahone area and found one entry. This is for Michael “Commerford,” leasing property in Poulacapple West, Civil Parish of Kilvemnon. Patrick O’Connell’s wife, Mary Comerford, may have been related to this Michael Comerford.

Michael Commerford in Griffiths Valuation is on the same page as John and William Britt, whose entries you saw earlier.

The valuation shows Michael leased over 3 acres of land and a house from the Reps. of J. Stephens, Esq. His land was valued at 3 Pounds, 10 Shillings, while his house was valued at 5 Shillings. The total valuation for Michael’s lease was 3 Pounds and 15 Shillings

The Griffiths valuation transcription for Michael Commerford is below:

Next I looked for O’Connells and Connells in the Tithe Applotment Books for Mullinahone, Killaghy, and Poulacopple West and East, Civil Parish of Kilvemnon, but found none. I did locate however, a Thomas Connell in the townland of Glorteen, Civil parish of Kilvemnon in the Tithe Applotment Books found at the National Archives of Ireland website link. I’m not sure however if this Thomas is related to your Stephen and Patrick O’Connell.

But, I did find Michael Commerford in the Tithe Applotment Books for Poulacapple, West, Civil Parish of Kilvemnon.
The index for Michael Commerford can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/ajpln32

The Tithe Applotment Book page listing Michael Commerford can be found at:

At the bottom of the Tithe Applotment Book page for Michael Commerford you’ll also see an entry for a James Britt. At the top of the page are entries for Thomas and John Cody.

To view a modern day Google Map of Mullinahone, County Tipperary, go to: http://tinyurl.com/alv5x7t

Once at the map you’ll see in the center of the town the Stack of Barley, which you mentioned in your post to the Ancestry.com message board for County Tipperary. On the map you’ll also see the letter A pointing to Mullinahone. Above and to the right of the letter A, you’ll see the location for Poulacapple. Right-click on the letter A to generate a “Street-view” thumbnail photo of the town. Click on the photo to enlarge it, and you’ll be able to take a virtual tour of Mullinahone with your mouse and pointer, though I don’t believe you’ll be able to navigate your way to Poulacapple. But you’ll be able to go past St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Kickham Street. This church was built in 1969 on the site of the former church building, and so would not be the original church where your Bretts and O’Connells had worshipped. U.S. RECORDS FOR STEPHEN BRETT AND MARGARET O’CONNELL

I found the ship’s passenger list for Stephen Brett and Maggie O’Connell who arrived in New York on board the ship Teutonic on 13 May 1897. The passenger list notes that both Stephen and Maggie were from Mullinahone. Also on board the ship from Mullinahone is a man named Edward O’Brien. You probably already have this record, as you had mentioned in your post to the Ancestry.com message boards that Stephen, at least, arrived in the U.S. in 1897. This ship’s passenger list was found at Ancestry.com.

I also found Stephen Brett and Margaret O’Connell listed twice in a collection at Ancestry.com called, “UK, Outward Passenger Lists, 1890-1960.” The first entry shows Stephen and Margaret on the manifest of a ship named Germanic, which left Queenstown, Ireland for New York on 29 April 1897. But, Stephen and Margaret’s names are crossed off the manifest of the ship. They reappear again on the Teutonic, which left Queenstown for New York on 6 May 1897. This is the ship on which they arrived in New York on 13 May. I also found a Stephen Brett listed in two other Outward bound passenger lists from Queenstown, both times on the ship Majestic. The first time he is listed is 9 June 1892 when he was age 16, and the second time on 30 November 1892 when he is listed as 17 years old. I believe these two entries may pertain to your Stephen Brett.

In a collection at Ancestry.com called “UK Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960,” I found a 31 year old Stephen Brett, 24 year old Margaret Brett, and a 23 year old Mary Brett, arriving in Queenstown, Cork, Ireland, from New York on board the ship Baltic. The date of arrival in Queenstown, Cork was 11 July 1914. If this passenger list refers to your Bretts, their ages on the ship’s manifest would have been incorrect, as we know that Stephen Brett and Margaret O’Connell Brett were born in the 1870s.

World War I in Europe was to begin just 17 days (28 July 1914) after the Brett’s arrival in Queenstown.

In addition to ship’s passenger lists I also found Stephen Brett’s naturalization records at Ancestry.com, as well as his World War I draft registration card. I also found Stephen and his family in U.S. census returns for the 1900s.

If you don’t already have a subscription to Ancestry.com, contact your local public library, as many public libraries today have subscriptions to Ancestry’s full collections for Great Britain, including Ireland, and the U.S. You can also try Ancestry.com on a two week trial period for free.

CONCLUSION

Pertaining to Irish records, before ordering any birth, marriage, or death transcriptions from the IFHF, or birth, marriage, and death certificates from the GRO in Roscommon Town, and before ordering LDS microfilms, I recommend that you access the same indexes that I did, to see if you agree that these records for the ancestors you are looking. You may save money by doing so, and cut down on the number of records that may not pertain to your Tipperary ancestors.

As mentioned at the beginning of this reply, I am not a descendant of the Brett’s and O’Connells, and have not been researching these families in the past, and so cannot be completely certain that all the records I found online pertain to the Brett and O’Connell families in your direct, or collateral lines.

Best Wishes, and Good Luck with your research,

Dave Boylan

Hi, Thank you for all your hard work. A little of this I already know but a lot is new ie the marriages of my grandparents siblings and the Irish Census info. Thank you for sharing how to find all of this information. It is interesting how you found the marriages. I have had a lot of difficulty with that. I was trying to find the date of death of the sibling but Ancestry is gives a quarterly date. Thank you for pointing out to me that Callan and Kilvenon is the district for Mullinahone. That is very helpful. Ellen Cody Brett who was my great grandmother died in about 1930. The Ellen you listed maybe my grandfather's sister. I haven't been able to find a date of death for John Brett my great grandfather but I know it was before my grandfather left Ireland in 1897.Thank you for finding that for me. Stephen and Maggie missed the first boat they were booked on because Ellen Cody Brett borrowed the money from Stephen that he was going to use to elope to America. He had to wait until she gave it back to him. Ellen did not approve of my grandmother because she was servant class. The trio in 1914 is probably my grandfather and my 2 aunts because I don't think my grandmother ever went back to Ireland. Do you know how to find out if any of the siblings became priests or nuns? I know that at least one of my great aunts on the Brett side became a nun in Ireland. Is there a church database for this?
Anastasia is used by the O'Connells because my grandmother Maggie had a little sister who died at age 5 named Anastasia. Maggie used it for a middle name for my second aunt Catherine in 1909 .
I am going to look at all the information that you gave me with the websites carefully. Thank you for all your help.

You’re welcome Carol, and many thanks for both your replies.

I am not familiar with a clergy or religious database for Ireland that gives the names and birthplaces of priests and nuns. But that doesn’t mean one doesn’t exist, it’s just that I’ve never had occasion to look for information about nuns in Ireland.

But, there is another way you can find out if an ancestors had joined a religious order if they were born, say in the 1860s into the 1890s, and that’s by going to the 1901 and 1911 census returns.

One good things about the census form from the National Archives is you are given a choice, under the heading, “More search options,” to choose the county a person was from, their gender, as well as their occupation.

I started with the 1901 census to see if any females born in County Tipperary named Brett, were Nuns.

I got one hit from the search which shows a 25 year old Mary Columba Brett was indeed a “Teaching Nun” born in County Tipperary, though the census doesn’t say where in Tipperary she was from. She is in the household with four other nuns in an address of House Number 2, Drangan, Tipperary. The House and Building Return form states that House Number 2 was a convent. The 1901 census transcription from the National Archives can be found at:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/D...

The House and Building Return form for the convent can be found at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003906962/

I also checked the House and Building Return form to see if there were any schools nearby House Number 2 in Drangan, but found there were not.

To see Drangan on a Google Map of Ireland, go to: http://tinyurl.com/craq8e6

Once at the map go to the Zoom-in/Zoom-out gage in the upper left corner, and zoom in on the map so that more landmarks of the town are delineated. If you’ve zoomed-in far enough (but not too far), you’ll landmarks such as the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Killinardish House, Church View, The Old Creamery, etc. You’ll also see the letter A sitting on top of the label for the Church of the Immaculate Conception. Left-click on the Letter A to generate a Street-view image, and then click on the image itself to enlarge it, and you’ll be in on the road front of the Church, though I’m not sure if the convent, at House Number 2, was near the church.

Next, go back to the map for Drangan. Off the map to the left, you’ll see a prompt labeled “Directions” highlighted in blue. Left-click on Directions and a drop-down box labeled A will appear. Inside the box type in Mullinahone, South Tipperary, Ireland, and then click on “Get Directions.” The map that appears will show Drangan at Letter B, and Mullinahone at Letter A. The distance between the two towns is 6.1 kilometers, which is 3.8 miles. This means that if the Mary Brett in the convent was your ancestor’s relative, she would not have had far to go from home to live in the convent.

Next, going to the 1911 census I found a 34 year old Mary Brett in a convent with several others nuns belonging to the order of the Sisters of Mercy, in an address of House Number 11, Carrownreddy, Tipperary. Carrownreddy is a part of Tipperary Town. Mary Brett can be found a little more than half way down the census page. See this census at: http://tinyurl.com/c3ha4j6

The fourth person enumerated after Mary Brett is 34 year old Mary “Connerford, also born in Tipperary..” However, in the copy of the original 1911 census her last name appears to read “Comerford” rather than Connerford. See:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003349637/

I am wondering if Mary Brett and Mary Comerford were cousins. The 1911 census was taken on the night of Sunday, April 2nd, 1911. At 34 years of age in 1911 Mary Brett would have been born circa 1877. However, is she had been born after April 2, she would have actually turned 35 years old in 1911.

With this information I looked for Mary Brett’s birth index at the Later Day Saints website. I particularly wanted to see if a Mary Brett had been born between 1875 and 1877 in Mullinahone or perhaps in Poulacapple, Tipperary. The results of this search shows that a Mary “Britt” was born in “Poulcopple” on 30 May 1876. Her parents are listed as John Britt and Honora Ryan Britt.

Mary’s birth record can be found on LDS microfilm number 255955, which can be ordered from the GRO in Roscommon Town.

The 1911 census shows that Mary Brett and Mary Comerford were both 34 years of age and so I wanted to see if the birth of a Mary Comerford was recorded in Mullinahone or Poulacapple, Tipperary in 1876 at the LDS website. I didn’t find a birth index for a Mary Comerford in 1876, but did locate an index for 1874, showing that Mary Comeford’s birth was recorded in Mullinahone on 1 March of that year. Her parents are listed as George Comerford and Mary Brien:

The birth indexes from the LDS and IFHF websites for Mary Britt and Mary Comerford show it is feasible that these children, when they were older, would become nuns with the Sisters of Mercy. But, I can’t prove that just from the census returns and birth indexes alone.

Going back to the 1911 census the House and Building Return form shows that House Number 11 in Carrownreddy, was a convent. See the link at: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003349609/

Also on the House and Building Return form, at House Number 10, you’ll see the notation that this dwelling was an “Industrial School.” The pupils in this school, all girls, were also enumerated in the 1911 census. You can view the students and employees of the school in the 1911 census at: http://tinyurl.com/akfr22r

I believe the Sisters of Mercy taught children in this industrial school.

To view a Google Map of Carrownreddy, Tipperary Town, go to: http://tinyurl.com/a22fmd7

Once at the map, zoom-in a little bit so that more landmarks of the place are visible. Just above the Letter A you’ll see that Rosanna Road ties into St. Michael’s Street. St Michael’s Street is highlighted in yellow. At this junction you’ll see the Convent of Mercy and the Convent Lodge. Next, go back to the Zoom-in/Zoom-out gage. At the top of the gage you’ll see a little yellow peg-man. Left-click on the peg-man and drag him over to the label for the Convent of Mercy, and then let go of him. This will being up a street view. You’ll then see that you looking at a church. You’ll have to go to the right of the church. There you’ll see a three story building attached to the church. I believe this structure may be the convent.

Carol, if your great aunt was Mary Brett, chances are the Mary Brett who joined the Sisters of Mercy is the person you are looking for.

Best Wishes,

Dave

Thank you for your help! Stephen Brett (my grandfather)did not have a sister Mary. His parents were John Brett and Ellen Cody. The 2 sisters that may have been nuns were Margaret and Ellen Brett. That Mary Brett may be a cousin. However, my great grandmother was Mary Comerford born in 1830's. She was the mother of Maggie O'Connell Stephen's wife. Both families came from Mullinahone.
The Mary Comerford you found may be the cousin of my grandmother. Maggie was born in 1871. I do not know the parents of Mary Comerford (Maggie's mother) but I should investigate George because that could be a brother. This was great help because I could never find anything on Mary Comerford when I searched. Maggie's (Margaret) father was Patrick O'Connell. Thanks so much I'm going to look at the websites.
Sincerely,
Cathy

Hi Cathy,

Thank you for the update. I went back to the 1901 and 1911 census returns to see if I could find an Ellen or Margaret Brett/Bitt/ Bet/Brit, etc, who may have become nuns, but the search was unsuccessful. From the birth indexes noted in the first reply, Ellen was born in 1879, and so she would have been 22 years old in 1901 and 32 years old in 1911. I’m not sure when Margaret Brett was born, as I didn’t find a birth index for her.

It’s possible, if either Ellen or Margaret were nuns, they may have been missed in the 1901 and 1911 enumerations, or perhaps they entered religious orders when they were older. It would be helpful if the 1921 census were available for research, but it’s my understanding that the National Archives of Ireland only releases the census returns after 100 years, and so it’ll be at least 8 more years before we can search the 1921 enumeration, unless the NA agrees to a release date earlier than 100 years.

On the chance that Ellen or Margaret became nuns and then emigrated to the U.S., or first emigrated to the U.S. and then became nuns, I looked for the in the 1900-1930 census returns, but didn’t find them.

Cathy, if you learn anything new, please let me know.

Best Wishes,

Dave

Me and my husband just fell randomly upon this post. We got married this past june in my hometown Chicago and I moved to his hometown of mullinahone, co. Tipperary. My husbands family is the Brett's that owns the stack of barley and our cousin and uncle run Brett's hardware.
I don't know if I can personally help you with any questions but I can certainly help.

Hi, My grandfather was Stephen Brett, the son of Ellen Cody and John Brett. He was born in Mullinahone in 1874. He had about 12 brothers and sisters, one of which must be your grand or great grandparent. He eloped to America in 1897 but visited Mullinahone and the family several times throughout his life. Stephen and his brother Nicholas were the only siblings to immigrate to America. I would love to find out more about the family history if you would not mind sharing. Two of my children met Ed Brett in the Brett Hardware store a few years ago.He told them that his grandfather and their great grandfather (my grandfather Stephen) were brothers. We are a very big family in America. Stephen and his wife Margaret O'Connell (also from Mullinahone) had 8 children,18 grandchildren and 52 great grand children. I am the youngest grandchild. Thank you so much for responding I really appreciate you taking the time to write. Hope to hear from you soon.
