My mother's family of Keoghs were landowners in the parish of Taughmaconnell, Co. Roscommon,
until the late 1840's. Their home, Keoghville House, was situated in the townland of Carrownkeeran.
They also owned another house, Keoghville Lodge, nearby. The family had owned land in this area for
centuries. My gr-grandfather, John L. Keogh, emigrated 1st to England (London) in 1851, then to Old
Forge, PA in 1865. One prominent member of this family was John's 2nd cousin, Sir Alfred Keogh,
head of the British Army Medical Corps during WW1. I would very much enjoy hearing from any
other descendants of these Keoghs. Thank you. George Duffy

Sorry Helen,

I don't recognize any of your names. You apparently haven't traced your Keoghs back to any specific location in Ireland. That, of course, is the really difficult task. Good luck in your search.

George

Hi Helen,

The best advice I can give you is to personally visit every elderly relative you have, seek out distant cousins, and send letters to the ones you can't visit. Always include stamped self addressed envelopes. Ask, probe, nudge and be patient. Get copies of all the death certificates you can, check out obits, bibles or old letters, and do the leg work. There's really no other way.

In my case, my mother's family always knew that they came from a place called Keoghville. But it was necessary to find it in writing, by finding the deeds and wills and old letters that gave the legend substance. I'm still looking for the exact location in Ireland where my father's family originated. I've worked very hard in that effort, in 40 years of looking, though I may never be successful. Nevertheless, I've met a lot of great people along the way and that has made it worthwhile.

I wouldn't even think about working with Irish records until you have some pretty definite leeds from your research in this country.

Good luck, Helen.

George

Hi just been reading yourposting about Keoghs family from Roscommon. I dont know if this will help but I know of a Delia Keogh from Roscommon who was somehow related to Sweeneys of Roscommon, you might lookup the families on the leitrim -roscommon cenus page. I am actually a cousin to the younger Sweeney family of Fuerty at 1940s plus, but a Delai Keogh eventually came to live in Liverpool. If this is too far forward for you then you will probably have a Delia to check back from here.Good Luck Sheila

I have no evidence that J. L. Keogh was married more than once. He certainly didn't have 20 or 24 children. I wonder what your evidence is? Who was Judge Sadlier?

George

Any Valentine Keogh's in the family line. He would have been born approximately 1820, married a Annie, had a daughter Annie born in Newfoundland, Canada. Annie married Peter Sherry in Ontario around the 1880 mark.
