FindMyPast... opinions needed!

Findmypast . uk site

Just wondering whether to subscribe...

I do know they offer a free trial... I could start with that.. but if it doesn't offer what i am looking for, I'd be wasting my time. Plus they need your credit card info as well... o_0... not too crazy about that either...

I am looking for more than just birth indexes... I need the names of parents to children born in the 1880's.. would I be able to get this info?

Hard to research when too many people show up with the same name all born in the same month... same area...

Thank you in advance

Look forward to your opinion!

The simple answer is no.

Civil Registration Indexes do not include the names of parents. From the middle of 1911 onwards, they do include the maiden name of the mother.

If the children were baptised you should be able to see the parents married names (i.e John and Jane Smith). Many children though were not baptised. Findmypast does have an extensive array of parish registers, as does FamilySearch and Ancestry.

The only way for certain that you will get the parents names is to purchase birth certificates at a cost £9.50 each from the GRO. When you order certificates it is possible to include on the order form the names of the parents that you are looking for, and if the entry does not include the identified parents you get a full refund.

If you know the area, town, etc where your ancestors resided you can go to the census for that area. These are published from 1841 every 10 years till 1911.The very early ones do not have much information. This means that if you can get back to start at 1911, 1901, 1891, etc you can trace back through till 1841.
Best of luck.

Hi Megan Roberts,

Thank you for the quick reply..!!

I had originally contacted a couple of board admin's but the emails bounced back.

I think I'll pass up a membership for now... you've answered my questions...

I volunteered to help a friend with some research... and will certainly pass on this info to her.

Again thank you, and best wishes for the Holiday Season.

Hi readderek,

Yes, I checked the last census record available for this family.

Problem is there was one other child born right after the 1881 census - then they left Wales and headed out to America for good.

Thank you for the quick reply and best wishes for the Holiday Season!
