Looking for Gerald McEllistrim or McIllistrim later Gerald Montrio

Could anyone help me with some information?
I'm looking for information about Gerald McEllistrim. It seems he was born at Cardiff, Wales, England on Dec 21st 1908, but some papers point he was Irish.
His parents names were John McEllistrim + Julia (but she's not sure). Gerald was a merchant navy seaman and he travelled around the world. On April 1936 he asked for American Naturalization and on the papers of petition says that his name was "Gerald Montrio (formerly Gerald McEllistrim or Gerald McEllistrim Brooks). It's a mistery the reason for which he changed his paternal name McEllistrim to Montrio.
He married in USA with an Argentinian woman and had 2 children a boy (called Gerald like him) and a girl. His children brought the adopted name Montrio.
His son Gerald dissappeared with a friend (they both had 15 and 13 years old) and never had been found. Now this story is a cold case recently reopened and published in the NAMUs data base.
His daughter says her father never told them about his origins, his family. She knows very little about his father.
Why he changed his family name?

Hi,
I then found this!

Marriage reg.

Gerald McEllistrim Cardiff 11a 486 Mar.Qtr 1909

His wife is named Margaret but she is not in the list of brides so you may find it useful to buy the marriage cert.
I thought it strange to find an unusual name repeated,he is born in Tralee and Margaret was born in Monmouthshire and they have a dau.Martha Joanna born 1910.

Sandra

Sandra, many, many thanks for the information. Yes, I'm afraid the information about Gerald is a bit confusing. I thought Brooks was like a middle name but it seems to be a family name. I wonder why Gerald changed the name so many times...? Maybe he was trying to disconnect from roots? Why? The family name McEllistrim could be the family name of his mum Julia? Do you have any idea where I could find more information?
Again, thank you very much. You opened in front of me another way to look for.
Best regards,

Francesca

He was born Gerald McEllistrim BROOKS on 21 Dec 1908 Cardiff, Glamorgan Wales
Parents: Isaiah BROOKS and Julia McELLISTRIM who married 10 Jan 1895 in Tralee, Co Kerry Ireland.
He was the 7th born and 6th surviving, of 8 children born to his parents.
First he dropped the BROOKS & went as ELLISTRIM, prior to or around 1930 (possibly at the time he went to sea)
Then he dropped ELLISTRIM and assumed MONTRIO from around 1936 onward after he arrived in US as an emigrant.
Though he had been to the US as a ships crewman as early as 1930, he emigrated formally the US in April 1936 on the ship, "Steel Scientist". He appeared on the Crew List as Gerald ELLISTRIM as an Able Seaman from Singapore to NY. On arrival in NY, he was formally discharged as crewman Gerald ELLISTRIM and then listed on the list of disembarking Passengers as a visa carrying Gerald McEllistrim BROOKS, Contruction Engineer. He applied for US Naturalisation later in 1936 under MONTRIO but on the petition, declared himself as having arrived in April 1936 Gerald McEllistrim BROOKS.

NOTE: The same question about Gerald was posted on Mutliple Boards! I'm linking them all up, to avoid anyone else doing what I just did - spend heaps of time on research to try help (via the Falkland Island Board) only to later find r the other posts and some duplication of effort on other boards (the ones marked **)!
