Hi, can anyone tell me what mines were operating in the 1916-22 period in Mynyddislwyn . Does it still exsist as a place as it is not on my auto route 2000 cd. My father was born there in 1922, his father Tom Simpkins worked in a mine, was sent from Box, Wilts, where he worked as a stone quarryman. Would like to find out more about the area. A name of a street is all I have Fleur de Lies street. Any ideas?

Diolch yn Fawr, Linda.

Mynyddislwyn is a district which covers a number of towns & villages in the area north of Caerphilly, including the village of Fleur-de-Lys. Try the following links:

Coal mines operating in 1918 can be found on the following link:

Hi , Thanks for your answer to Mynyddislwyn. Can you help with another question.
My grandfather worked in one of the mines and was as I understand a Hitcher.
Is it possible, and how, would I find out which one?.
Also what is a Hitcher?.
My father had a Salvation Army dedication cert. which says that place of birth is 26 William street. Penfam, is this in Mynyddislwyn?

hello linda with my little knowledge of underground i think a"hitcher"was the miner who secured the drams to the horse,s or other means of power to retrieve the coal. i think you,ve got the name "penfam" mistaken with pengam which is just outside mynyddislwn ,try searching PENGAM SOUTH WALES UK then IMAGES OF WALES in the links, there are quite a few photo,s of the area, also try KELLY,S DIRECTORY OF MONMOUTHSHIRE 1901 this takes in all the area,s you,ve mentioned

I don't think employee lists would have survived from pre-nationalisation times; the only chance would be if a local historian had preserved them; you could try the Family History Society for that area.

A hitcher was someone who joined together the coal trucks and hitched them to the horse or engine to pull them to the pit bottom and thence to the surface.

The placename you have should be PENGAM, which is in
the district of Mynyddislwyn, between Fleur-de-Lys and
Aberbargoed.

Mynyddislwyn is actually a mountain in between two valleys.
It seperates the Sirhowy valley from Abercarn, Cwmcarn and surrounding areas.
I live in the middle of the Sirhowy Valley at a place called YNYSDDU.That is between Crosskeys and Pontllanfraith. One road into the valley and one road out!!!
There were many collieries around here for many years, but they have now all gone. Within about a five mile radius they were about 20 mines or so. If you can be a bit more specific I may be able to help you.

The place you named, Fleur de Lys is about 4-5 miles away and is a small village. It is very near to Blackwood and on the edge of Cefn Fforest(my inlaws live there) so again I could help.
Please feel free to contact me on: i.m.j@btinternet.com

Do you still have family in the area? There are still Simkins living locally who may be able to help.
