Surnames: Benton, Benson, Nash
I am a greatgreat granddaughter of Jesse Benton (b. 9 May 1798 N.C., d. 12 July 1842 Siluria, Shelby Co., Ala.) and his wife Barnissa Benson (b. 6 Aug 1805 S. C., d. 23 Apr 1864 Siluria, Shelby Co., Ala). Their oldest son was James Monroe Benton, (b. 20 Dec 1826, d. 18 March 1909 married first Sarah Caroline Nash 24 June 1846). Jesse and Barnissa also had children Franklin, B. 10 Dec 1828, d. 22 Oct 1830, William b. 10 Feb 1830, Lucinda b. 18 Mar 1832, (married Ira Nabors), Eveline b. 29 July 1834, (married Pleasant W. Meredith), Benjamin Franklin 'Dock' Benton b. 24 Apr 1836 (my great grandfather) (married first Julia Ann Johns 7 Sept 1854, second married Hettie Ann Morris July 1865)d. 12 Jan 1900 Trinity County, Texas, Columbus S. Benton, b. 24 Jan 1838, (married Margaret Elizabeth Oldham) and Caroline Benton, b. 8 Dec 1839 (married John Harrell). James Monroe Benton and his wife Sarah C. Nash had a son who apparently died at birth unnamed, a son Jesse b. 3 Nov 1849, d.11 July 1851, and a son John b. 9 Nov, 1848, d. 12 Apr 1858. Sarah C. Nash Benton b. 9 Oct 1828, died 16 Apr 1858. James Monroe Benton had a second wife, Frances C. Faust, b. 30 Aug 1817, d. 3 May 1891. I have no idea how many children he may have had other than those who died early; there is one of his sons with Sarah C. Nash, William C. Benton, b. 8 Oct 1855, d. 29 July 1917, married Sarah E. Reneau, buried in the same Benton Cemetery in Shelby County, Alabama. James Monroe Benton is buried there between his two wives. I hope this may be of some help to you in locating the family of your James M. Benton. Marie

Thank you for taking the time to share this wealth of information. I will look into it. I recently found a relative on the Benton side and am waiting to her from her and see if she can help.

Many thanks again. Happy Holidays!

I recently found out, thru the Benton DNA Project, that I am related to these Benton's. I have been in contact with some of the descendants in Utah. Be happy to exchange with you also.

Thanks,
Al Benton

Marie,
I am descended from Jesse's daughter Evaline. My question is about Jesse Benton. Is he the brother of the senator Thomas Hart Benton? If so, is he the Jesse Benton who shot Andrew Jackson in 1813?
Thanks,
Tina
