Thank you for your message of Oct 25, 2000. Unforturnately I think we are researching different lines of the family. Parents of Alice were George and Lydia and their parents were William and Elizabeth. In the 1851 census George and Lydia had two children Alice age 2 and a not yet named - later called Elizabeth Mary. We have limited other information. Thanks again and good luck. Cathy

I know someone who has a published history of this family name, given to her by an aunt. Since this family was in the area mine was in (Quinte Bay) I have asked to borrow the book, but haven't gotten around to picking it up. I shall make a point of doing so and will check back to see if either of the families mentioned here are mentioned there. For specific inquiries, feel free to e-mail me. Heidi

Heidi - thank you for your message regarding the subject name and offer to check a book for us. There apparently are two George Vankoughnet - however ourline is George Born 1828 married to Lydia Born 1829 from Sheffield Twp. Parents of George were William and Elizabeth nee Loyd. Siblings of George were Katherine Wesley Barbary Magdeline Cinderella Rachel Lydia Ezzy and William. We have no info on Lydia. George and Lydia had two children Alcie and Mary Elizabeth. Alice married David Burgess son of Robert Burgess and Elizabeth Orr. David and Alice would be my great grandparents. We have come to dead end so any information would be of great value. Please advise your line and if we have any info we will gladly share it as well. Thank you for your kind offer and good luck in your research. Cathy

Bob - Thank you for your message on the family name Vankoughnet. Yes, we do have the right connection. Names and dates match to our records. Alice Vankoughnet married to David Burgess would be my great grandparents. We have very limited information on the Vankoughnets and information on the Burgess line to Davids parents Robert and Elizabeth Burgess - then a brick wall. Would be more than happy to share any information we have. Our line also includes the family names Vanluven and Irish if you are interested in those names. Cathy

"The Massey-Vankoughnet Connection" by Vada Massey Davidson

Surnames: van gochnat, vankoughnet, kellar, massey
This book was printed in 1996 by Maltec Graphics Inc., North York ON, has 632 pages and an index. Condensed and paraphrased from the Introduction and early chapters:

The first Vankoughnet ancestor to come to Canada was Yerrigh (William) Van Gochnat b ca 1758. The book briefly records 4 generations previous to William. As a member of the 1st Batt KRRNY, William claimed land in Fredericksburg, Midland District. His wife was Yanothsa Jinney (Janet or Jean) Kellar, d/o Loyalist Christian Kellar. William and Jean had 6 children: Peter, Christian, John, Elizabeth, Margaret and William.

Peter's line is the remainder of this book. His siblings are given birthdates and nothing else. Peter's grandson George had four daughters who married three Massey brothers. The book is wonderfully written and documented, and has lots of photographs. Personal data for most include everything from occupation cause of death.

If anyone would like me to check the index for a surname, I will be happy to do so. :) Heidi
