My second great grandfather was Thomas Coggins b Aug 1828 in Easky, Co Sligo. In Ireland he married Ellen Finnerty [Finaghty][b Mar 1826] in Ireland in 1856.
Thomas and Ellen emigrated to the US circa 1864, with his mother Mary [Feeney] Coggins, widow of Andrew, she was born 1799. Andrew is likely buried there.

I have found a few other Coggins families, that I suspect are related, here in the US...but I sure would love to find some of my Irish relatives.

Thanks in advance, Laurie

You could try a small writing project. There are 10 Coggins, 7 Finnerty's in the Ireland/Sligo telephone directory and 1 in Easky. Feeny either Galway or Dublin.
You could write them all as stamps are inexpensive genealogy.Addresses are sufficient for delivery.
It can be successful and gives you something to do while waiting for your post to be replied to.

You probably already have this information but here goes anyway:

Easky, in place names is listed as a village/town, parish.

In 1857 Griffith Valuation took place in Sligo, a valuation for taxes and it is used as a valuable census substitute.
It can be found free on line.
www.askaboutireland.ie
www.failteromhat.com

There are 40 Coggins listed - no Andrew so he may have been deceased by then. And none listed in Mary's name but the property lease could also pass to a child, there are Mary's but not in Easky Parish. There is a Thomas and a Daniel:

Thomas Coggins, Parish of Easky, Townland of Carrownrush
tenant of Chas. Tottenham, property #20 a house
Poor Law Union Dromore West

Daniel Coggins, same info but townland Finned property #29a house, outbuilding and land 20 acres 0 roods and 23 perches
Poor Law Union Dromore West

There are 8 Finnerty's, 3 in the Parish of Easy,2 x Thomas and 1 John.*note the Thomas could be one person with two properties.

There is one Coggins and one Finnerty in the commercial directories a grocer and a fruiterer.

Sligo belongs to a Hertigage Foundation a not for profit organization which provides county birth and marriage records on line. A small fee is charged.

Thomas Cogins born 1828,
Thomas Cogan 1830
Thomas Cogan 1831
Thomas Coggons 1832

Marriages 12 these are the most likely from your info:
Cogan 185l, Coggins 1855, Coggans 1871

Baptisms Mary:
Mary Finaghty 1823, Finachty 1829 and Feenaghty 1831.

No marriages for Mary or Ellen or Mary Ellen Finnerty.
There is one marriage for an Ellen Cogan 1867 Sligo.

The earliest birth for Mary Feeney is 1803 so earlier records either don't exist or your dating is out bit.

Andrew Coggins: only records are andrew Richard Cogan born
1874. and a Marriage 1828 for Andrew Cogan (which fits your birth year for Thomas)

As this is considered a commercial website by rootsweb you would need to contact me for this website by regular email.

Very lucky to get more than Ireland in US records, that will help you a lot in finding what you might need.

Easky C of I records go back to 1822, but no RC records which are in local church custody and never were given to National repositories.

Thank You Annette!

I guess it will be a letter writing campaign and a few prayers they answer my letters...Maybe even adding self addressed stamped envelope would improve my chances???

If you include USA stamps they won't work from Ireland to the USA. Don't forget to give your house address, email address and phone number. Annette

You can google that, or get the Foundation website from me and they list all the Parish's and dates of records for both RC and CofI. You don't need to join to see the map, click on your county and then on sources list.

I can also give you a Parish map website, but they also charge but you can find what parish's are where in relation to each other but not the dates as above. Its good for Parish information and to see what counties border a county.
Don't pay for Griffith Valuations are they are free elsewhere.

www.failteromhat.com a simple version

www.askaboutireland.ie property information

ps if you are concerned about your email address and contacting me, I do a hundred of these a month and never keep them, or open a hotmail account

Hi
The National Library of Ireland in Dublin has on microfilm, records for most RC Church Parishes in Ireland.Research in the National Library is free. Also the following website has Church records both RC and C of I for most counties. This is a Pay site.
http://www.rootsireland.ie/
The Co. Sligo Heritage and Genealogy Society also has Records for County Sligo . There is a fee for their services.
Aras Reddan, Temple St., Sligo
Tel: +353 71 9143728
Email: heritagesligo@eircom.net

R C Church records for Easkey are not available before 1864 for Births and before 1898 for Marriages.
Unfortunately many early registers were destroyed during the fire at the Public Records Office of Ireland in 1922, during the Civil War or were lost locally. The Roots Ireland website page for Sligo Lists the Church Records available.
If your ancestor Coggins was born before 1864 ,then there will be no records available. In 1864 Civil registration was introduced. Records of Births ,Marriage and Deaths for County Sligo are available in the Civil registrations Office Markievicz House ,Barack Street Sligo

Hope this helps
