I'm searching for any and all info on Jacob Riffle Sr.,his descendants and/or ancestors.
I have a ship's record dated August 28, 1750 which shows a Jacob Riffle as a passenger on the Ship Phoenix. Most Riffle researchers believe this was our Jacob who married Dorothy and came to WV. However I'm not so sure that it was. According to my records, Jacob was born in about 1745-1750. (I've been searching all through my records to find how I arrived at that date, but it seems to me that somewhere I saw something that said he was 66 when he died. Don't quote me on this, I still can't find the record). If it's true that he was born in 1745-1750, then that could not have been him on the ship's record (only male passengers 16 years and older were listed), however, it could have been his father. If that was indeed him on the ship's record, then his birth year would have to be at least 1733. (I've seen other researchers use dates anywhere between 1725-1745). Does anyone have an accurate source to pinpoint his birth year?
According to the ship's record, the ship left last from Cowes (England). Many German emigrants made camp in England prior to coming to America. The Ship Phoenix docked in Philadelphia. I went searching for marriage records, naturalization records, birth records, etc.in PA and came across Andrew M Riffle who was married to Abigail, but nothing for our Jacob.
Does anybody know anything about about Andrew M. Riffle? He had a son George (b-1754) who married Elizabeth Salser. George and Elizabeth had 11 children, all of which settled in Mason county, WV or nearby Meigs, Ohio. (I have quite a bit of info on the Mason county Riffles and some on the Ohio Riffles.) I've wondered if perhaps George and Jacob were brothers, by can find no proof.
I have record of two other early Virginia Riffles, Francis and Mathias, who could also be brothers to Jacob Sr. It is believed that Francis Riffle was killed by Indians in abt.1781. (An Elener Riffle is shown on both the 1782 Monongalia and 1785 Harrison county Tax Census as having a total of 7 whites in the household. Possibly this could be the wife of Francis Riffle.) All I know of Matthias Riffle is that he served as a Ranger from Monongalia under the command of Captain John Whitzell in 1778. I believe Matthias was married to Mary C. and went to Mason county around 1800.
I'm hoping that if I can find a connection among these Riffles, perhaps I can find a clue as to where to look for Jacob's ancestors in Germany. In going through the IGI, I found 17 pages of Riffles (RIFFEL) born/christened in the early 1700's in various areas of Germany, but primarily in cities located either in Pfalz, Bayern or Rheinhessen, Hessen. Common given names were Jacobus, Nicolaus, Conradus, Georgius, and Fredricus or Franciscus. Has anyone done any Riffle research in Germany?
I look forward to hearing from all you Riffle researchers. All help will be greatly appreciated.
