Orphanages in North Georgia

I'm looking info about orphanages or orphanage records for North GA, and Stephens County specifically which were in operation about 1877 to 1890 or so. I'm aware of a Crafts Orphanage in Toccoa, but I believe it didn't start until 1911. I've just found out my great grandfather, James Lonzo "Lonnie" Boyd, may have been adopted either in Hall Co., GA, or Stephens Co., GA, sometime after he was born in 1877. Lonnie was raised by James B. and Mary A. Boyd of Hall Co., GA, and he died in 1934 in Toccoa, GA. While I knew for many years Lonnie was not directly descended from James & Mary Boyd, I've only recently been told by an older relative that Lonnie was adopted. I was told Lonnie's parents were both killed in a buggy - train collision, but I have no info on that accident and I don't know how old Lonnie would have been at the time. I'd be grateful for info on orphanages in that area as I know absolutely nothing about those institutions. Also, would there be any adoption records in the records in the county court house in Stephens County? If so, where should I start looking. E-mail to me at dale30809@aol.com, dale30809ga@aol.com, or dale30809ga@yahoo.com. Thanks very much. Dale Boyd, Evans, GA

Stephens County was formed in 1905 from Franklin and Habersham Counties. There would be no records on file for time period before this date in Stephens County. Toccoa would have been in Habersham County. I don't know how old an adoption record would need to be in order for anyone to see it. You might contact the Probate Judge in Habersham County about this.
