Need help connecting William Dampier 1651-1714/15 to Dampiers in the US during Revelutionary War NY, NC, GA. William was an explorer/ mapper/ pirate porting in England. He was the first person to circumnavigate the world 3 times. Don't know if there is a connection, would be nice to find out for sure. Thanks

There is a Dampier newsletter called the BUCCANEER, started by Jim Dampier of TN. Many of who are Dampier descendants believe that he is our common ancestor. In his book, VOYAGES AND DISCOVERIES, he says he spent several months on the VA coast. He also writes that he will not bore his readers with "the troubles that befell me in Virginia." We don't know if he means an irate father, or a wife(I know he had a wife in England)who died, or just what his troubles were. The first Dampier we find in the US is Daniel who was old enough in 1720 to witness a legal document (21).

Jim Dampier has a record of an old bible where it is written by his great uncle that the uncle's great grandfather was "a seafaring man who went to sea and never returned."

By assuming that William the Explorer is of my line, I have connected many Dampiers in the US with his family line. I will be glad to share any or all of the Dampier information that I have with you. I probably need your mailing address, because the information I have is quite lengthly.

Margaret,
Are you still at this email address? I'm descended from Elizabeth Dampier b. ca. 1605 Dorset, Eng. who was supposedly the sister of George Dampier Sr. b. 1618 Somerset Co.,Eng. who was the father of William Dampier "the Buccaneer".
Elizabeth & George were supposedly children of William Richard Dampier b. 1584/85 (Normandy, France?) d. 12/27/1662 East Coker, Somerset Co.,Eng. & wife Margaret Giles b. 1590 d. 1635.
If this info. is true, do you or do you know of anyone who might know the ancestry of William Richard Dampier (above?)
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks for any help.

I have a Joseph Dampier b 1810 married to Ann Richards in Somerset in my family tree. I have however reached a dead end with Joseph... The family always claimed the "buccaneer" line but I would just like to know if anyone has any info on Joseph and his ancestors that they may like to share. i believe he was a journeyman.. Ann was a dress maker.
they were my 3rd great grandparents.
Many thanks
Roxane
