Minnie Mae - Married to a Wisconsin Lumber Baron 1901

I'm looking for information on Minnie Mae. She was the second wife of my great grandfather.

Here is what I know: Born in Wisconsin in 1883. Came from a very poor family. Considered a great beauty.

At age 18, her mother arranged a marriage to a Wisconsin lumber baron in 1901. Her husband was a cruel man and she was able to get a divorce from him on those grounds. She was able to obtain a settlement that included household silver and her furs.

I believe she met my great grandfather, James Hooper Colton, in New York sometime after the death of his first wife in 1917. They married in 1922 and lived in Berkeley, CA. Both were very active at the Berkeley Country Club. in later years, they moved to Reno, NV. He died in 1964 and she passed away in 1966.

Looking for anything that might help me learn more about her.

Hello, I am not related. Hope this helps. Ruth Pokorny
------------
Your great grandfather lived with his children in Berkeley during the 1920 census. There was a Minnie M Campbell also living in Berkeley during the 1920 census. She was born about 1885 in Wisconsin, parents born in New York, and she was divorced. Maybe this was the Minnie you are looking for. You might want to check the marriages in Alameda County for James & Minnie instead of New York. Also during the 1920 census, there was a Willard Campbell living in San Francisco, born about 1882 in Wisconsin, father born Canada, mother born in Canada. Willard was also divorced. It looks like the same Willard and Minnie were living in Milwaukee Wisconsin during the 1910 census. I think I may have found their Wisconsin marriage record also, in Fond du Lac County Marriage index.

Hi again, found more stuff.

Minnie's marriage to Willard Campbell was online at familysearch.org. Parents are listed. Notice that Willard's Middle names are Van Brunt. These same initials, V.B., are in the 1920 California census for the divorced Willard.

Minnie had a sister, Debbie, and a brother, Alpheus. I found the family in the 1880 census, then Minnie & her widowed mother in the 1900 census, and married Debbie, and married Alpheus also in the 1900 census. Found Debbie in 1910, 1920, & 1930. Found Alpheus in 1910 & 1920. Lost track of him in 1930.

P.S. Minnie seems to have made herself younger than what she really was :o) But, so did her mother.

This marriage is not online at familysearch, but was found in the marriage index at the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Alpha Warren (Minnie's brother), married Carrie Elliot in 1896. Carrie most likely died before the 1910 census, because Alpha was then married to Grace M. If you look at the 1910 census for them, they both state that this was a second marriage for both of them, and they were married 1 year (1909).

Alpha must have died between the 1920 & 1930 census because Grace was a widow during the 1930 census.

Some more information that may contradict what you have listed.

According the the 1930 US Census, for JH and Minnie M Colton, living in Berkeley, CA, Minnie's parents are listed as both having been born in Wisconsin.

I know they first met in New York City, sometime between 1917 and 1922.

Thanks,

Roger

After Charlotte passed away, Susan Avery Colton (Aunt Susie) came back from China where she had been a missionary. She was there ostensibly to keep house for her brother James. As noted in the 1918 WWI Draft Registration card, she was living at the address on Parkside Drive in Berkeley. I have seen various records which indicate Susan went back to Japan and Korea as a missionary after that time.

In the 1920 Census, Susan has left the home with two servants in place. Anna Fallgren, age 22 and Molly Darling, age 45. Likely, a maid and a cook, respectively.

Clara Avery Colton is another sister of James. She came west from North Carolina and was a teacher in Berkeley.

So, the Colton's and the Avery's I've got.

Minnie Mae? The mystery continues. Thanks,

Roger

Roger, that's great. I'm glad you found evidence for James & Minnie. I would think there is a marriage record too. To verify Minnie's maiden name.
