Western Virginia in the War of 1812

Mark/Marks Researchers,

One of the most confusing issues searching Virginia regiments in the War of
1812 is the way the regiments were named and numbered. For example, there
were several 1st Regiments in the Virginia Militia (V.M.) at the SAME time!
A standard regiment was made of ten companies. The militia companies were
typically formed within a county, and were identified by their Captain's
last name. The companies forming a regiment did not necessarily come from
adjacent counties. The militia were called up for specified periods of time,
so a given regiment may have had companies coming in, serving, then leaving,
and being replaced several times during the war.

I've focused on companies formed in Western Virginia counties in the list
before (because that is where my research is focused). When you combine this
list with the Mark/Marks names listed in the War of 1812 rosters, you may
narrow your search to the names from regiments with companies formed in th
counties your ancestors were living in at the time.

For further research in the confusing matter of Virginia Regiments in the
War of 1812, I recommend:

Butler, Stuart Lee, "A Guide to Virginia Militia Units in the War of
1812"

PS: This list is nothing more than a fair-use indexing. The book contains
valuable information on the regimental histories, biographies of the
commanders, and information on the companies from all the counties of
Virginia.

Thank you! I had been trying to determine the county that William Prince's unit was from for several years. My ancestor served in this Company. Wood County makes perfect sense. William Biram/Byram lived in Wood Co and then across the river in Athens and Meigs County OH. Makes sense that he served from Wood County.
