Notes for WILLIAM MORRIS:

History of Kanawha County (written in 1876) says this about the Morris family:

"The Morris Family came to Kanawha in 1774, and are now found in every portion of the Valley. They have married and intermarried, until the original Morris blood runs in the veins of thousands of persons who reside in this portion of West Virginia.
William Morris Sr.*, was the first permanent settler of the Kanawha Valley. Walter Kelly was the first to locate on the Kanawha river, but he was murdered by the Indians a few months after his arrival in the valley. Mr. Morris came here soon after Mr. Kelly's death, and purchased the Kelly's creek tract of land from the widow of Mr. Kelly.
There were nine brothers of the original Morris family, viz: William, or "Billy" as he was always called, Henry, Joshua, Leonard, Levi, Edmund, John, Kellis, and Benjamin. There were but two sisters, viz: Betty and Franky.
William, as stated, located at the mouth of Kelly's creek, where Mrs. R.E. Tompkins now resides. John settled on the Kanawha, opposite the mouth of Campbell's creek, five miles above Charleston. Edmund and Joshua secured beautiful homesteads in Teay's Valley, and the other brothers settled at different points along the Kanawha river.
There were four "Billy Morrises," and in referring to them, it was often difficult to distinguish them from each other. "Old Billy" had a son called "Major Billy". Carroll, a son of "Major Billy", had a son whom he called "Little Billy", who was a noted salt-well borer; and Edmund had a son who went by the name of "Falls Billy", because he resided at the Falls of Kanawha."

William Morris Sr was born Jan.1,1722 and was 12 years old when he started for America from Scottland Yard. It is written that he was aboard a ship bound for the Americas seeing a friend, when the boat set sail with him on board. When he arrived here he was an indentured servant for a period of time. After this he moved to Culpepper Va. .There is alot written on the Morris family.

I am sorry to say that I do not have your Milton Morris in my files. However, the following information may be of some help.

William "Falls Billy" Morris (1787-abt.1859) married Sarah Maria Hansford (b.Jan.19,1792) and they had 3 sons:Fenton Mercer Morris b.1816 and the twins John and Joshua Morris b. 1817. He married his 2nd wife Ann Chapman (b.1800) on Oct.26,1820. They had 8 children : Benjamin b.1826, William b.1829, Levi b.1832, Hana b.1834, James b.1837, Frances b.1838, Angeline b.1842, and Ann b.1845 . They moved to Missouri but it is not stated when. It is possible that one of these could be Milton's parent.

Nicholas County: Nicholas County is the third child of Kanawha. It was created in 1818, from the territory of Kanawha, Greenbrier and Randolph counties, and had a population of 3,338, with 373 "tithables," and an area of 143 miles. It is watered by the Gauley and Elk rivers; its surface is generally broken, but in many localities it is rich and production. In the upper part of the county, (now included in Webster,) is a flat section of country, about ten miles long and from two to three miles in width, called "The Glades" which was evidently at one time a lake. It is covered with brush so thick that a fox can scarcely pass through it, and is low and marshy; but when properly drained it produces well. Nicholas is a grazing county, and its citizens carry on an extensive business in raising, and trading in stock. It is al noted for its large beds of all kinds of coal, and its primeval forests of superior timber. Source: History of Kanawha County, George W. Atkinson, 1876, p. 21

CLAY COUNTY Was established in 1856. It is thought by many to be the roughest county in West Virginia. Elk river passes through it from East to West, and is the only outlet for the commodities of the county. There is but little smooth but little smooth or level land within its territory; and as a natural consequence, there is not enough of hay, grain and the like, raised within the limits of the county to meet the actual wants of its citizens. The people of Clay county spend nearly all their time cutting saw-logs, getting out cooper stuff, hoop poles, C which are brought down the Elk river in very large quantities on nearly every rise. I have counted as many as one hundred and nine rafts, averaging one hundred logs each, as they came down Elk river, in one day, on a Spring rise. They were not all, however, from Clay, perhaps more than half of them being from Braxton and Webster counties. Like Braxton, Clay county is underlaid with immense beds of coal and iron, and whenever the locking and dam-ming of Elk river is completed, the lands of Clay county will necessarily become immensely valuable. Parthenia Morris, second wife of Eli Conaway, was from Kanawha County and descended from people important in the early history of Virginia and West Virginia. One one side she was descended from William Morris who was born in England in 1722 and came first to Philadelphia. In 1744 he lived in Culpepper County, Virginia, where he married Elizabeth Stepp. In 1744 he arrived in Kanawha County and founded Cedar Grove at the mouth of Kelly's Creek, head of navigation on the Kanawha River. There he built a Baptist Church and a school house. He was the first permanent white settler in the great Kanawha Valley and his was the first will recorded in Kanawha County.

William Morris was the father of eight sons and two daughters. His son Joshua, a soldier of the Revolution, married Francis Simms or Orange County, Virginia. Another son, William, a major in the Revolutionary War, married Catherine Carroll, a descendant of Charles Carroll, signer of the Declaration of Independence, of Carrollton and Homewood, Maryland. Carroll Morris, son of Major William, married Frances See and Parthenia was their daughter. Adam and Michael Frederick See came to Pennsylvania from Prussian Silesia, Germany, in 1734. From Pennsylvania they went to Hardy County, Virginia, in 1745. Adam See went from Hardy to Greenbrier County in 1860. He had several daughters and one son, George. George See had five sons and four daughters.

Eli was a soldier in the War of 1812 and was discharged at Morgantown on March 4, 1815. Eli Conaway went from Marion County, Virginia, to Monroe County, Ohio, after he married Mary Baker. In 1837 he came to Tyler County and bought 135 acres and 149 poles from John Barker and 50 acres from James Morris Smith on Middle Island Creek, across and below Joesph's Mill. In 1858 this farm was sold by his heirs to Zephaniah B. Riggle. Berkeley Smith, son of John M. Smith, grandson of James Morris Smith, and great-grandson of John and Mary Morris Smith, now lives on this farm. Mary Morris was the daughter of Reverend Isaac and Ruth Henton Morris. John Smith was born in Wales in 1775.
The children of Eli and Mary Baker Conaway were Austin, of California, Evans, of Bridgeport, Ohio, Silas, of Ravenswood, West Virginia, Joshua A., William, who lived in Mannington.

Deed in Wayne Co. Frederick See and Virginia See, his wife, selling land dated 7 Mar 1864. This would indicate that William's brother Frederick went to Iowa with them. Frederick could sign his name.
Letter states that Frederick did go to IA, but by 1870 was in Marion Co., IL with other Sees who had gone there.

According to Joe See, Frederick married a Creole widow, and moved to New Orleans, LA, then to TX.

Notes for WILLIAM SEE:

[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #4659, Date of Import: Mar 10, 2000]

William traveled west to IA about 1852 with most of his family members, and his friend Morris Greenlee and his family. They settled in Wayne Co., IA. Morris is buried there, but can find no burial records for either William or Sarah. Both appear on the Wayne Co. census in 1856 and 1860, as do John Rayburn and Lucinda See Rayburn, his wife, but all of them are gone by 1870 census. My grandfather William Burdett Rayburn, John's son, was married in St. Charles Co., MO in
and my father Charles Lawrence Rayborn was born in Jefferson Co., MO in , so I believe they went to Missouri.
William and Sarah were still in Wayne Co. in 1864, deeded land to Stouther, 12 Oct 1864.
With Strouther Willam and Sarah sold land in Wayne Co. in 1866, so they were still living there then. William and Sarah were illiterate, but Strouther wasn't.
Deed book D, p 328 (Kanawha Co.), 17 Dec 1814 - $1300 200 acres. William See of Mason Co. to James E. Harris of Kanawha Co. land on Kanawha river a little below the mouth of Campbell creek the same being an entry made in the name of Michael See, the one fifth of which the said William See is entitled to as one of the children or heirs of the said Michael See. Rec. 11 July 1815.

Puleeze, there is so much misinformation in the message you posted. Anyone researching the morris family, please disregard the "information" in it. JUST BECAUSE SOMEONES NAME IS THE SAME IT DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE THE ONLY ONE WITH THAT NAME. At least you had William Sr. correct.

Hello LOL,

I agree that there is a lot of junk and wrong info on Morris on line. Or, at least it is not documented information. Judging from your response, you have some good Morris data. If you are still researching the line please email me at wilson370@earthlink.net. Will be glad to exchange some good solid documented info.

I can't help but be impressed by the amount of research that you have represented. I was wondering if you had information on a William (F.?) Morris who was married to a Nancy Jones. The daughter, Sarah Elizabeth eventually married a David I. Hindsman in 1866 in Coweta Co., GA and then Samuel R. Hayes in 1875.

Any leads you may have would be extremely useful. Thank you in advance.

In the 1820 Pike Co. Ohio Census there is a Levi Morris listed. He is listed next to Bayliss Murphy from Culpepper Co. Va. Levi Morris's daughter Deborah Morris married Bayliss Murphy. I think Levi was born in the late 1700s. He died in Pike Co. Ohio.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, but I can't connect the Levi Morris you have with mine. I don't know where my Levi Morris was born, but according to records he married a Catherine.??. Your Levi Morris married a Lucretta Stephens.
Thanks,
Phyllis
