Hi Tony,

You might try searching the on-line 1901 census using surname
Ormrod and occupation travel* (or perhaps van* or caravan - implying
'van dweller' or similar). Obviously if you have specific
given names this will help.

Similar searches of the 1881 census transcript CDs using
the Neighbours-Advanced Query feature of the viewer may be
useful, though you may need to search several counties
(Lancs, Cheshire, Yorks, Nottingham, Leicester at least).

I will reply off-list with details of my unconfirmed Ormrod
ancestors, located as outlined as above.

Best Regards,

David

hi david. thanks for the reply, i will try as you suggest, its been driving me crazy. can`t seem to track them down, i know they were based, in a village called lees, nr oldham, but used to travel in summertime, i`m trying to find my great great grandfather, who died between 1886 and 1907, but searched through records, and does not appear on census between those dates, or death records, he must be registered somewhere. he`s name was john ormrod, and wife jane guest, had 4 children. once again thanks for replying, if you have anymore ideas, i would appreciate receiving them, thank you, tony

Hi again,

The 1901 census entry I think may be worth looking at is:

Cross Street Market, Hindley

John Ormrod, Head, M, 51, Van Dweller, Lancs Lees
Jane do, M, 41, Show Traveller, Cheshire Macclesfield
Maud do, Dau, S, 21, do, do do
Amy? do, Dau, S, 19, do, do do
Oliver do, Son, , 14, do, Lancs Lees
Lily do, Dau, , 11, , do Bolton
Mabel do Dau, , 9, , Cheshire Runcorn
Christina do, Dau, , 4, , do Macclesfield

Perhaps John's christening is the 1848 Ashton-under-Lyne
entry in Sue's reply?

Tried to send some more speculative information to the
e-mail address you posted under but the message was
returned.

Anyway, if this looks relevant and you have further info
such as birth dates of any older children not listed
above or other details such as middle names of any family
members, I may be able to show a connection.

Best Regards,

David

hi david, many thanks for your information, i`m pleased to say, it`s the right family i`ve been searching for, oliver was my great grandfather, he died in the first world war, never knew about he`s sisters, you have managed to narrow down, the dates for me, i always suspected he died between 1886 and 1907, which is alot of years to search, but now i know he was alive in 1900, he was described as deceased on olivers marriage certificate in 1907,as you can see, the children were born in different places, probably as they were travelling, i know about macclesfield because, because my other great grandparents lived there, they were not travellers, my great grandfather on janes side, was in the military. if you know how i can track down john ormrod`s place of death, which i have been trying for believe it or not for 3 years, any advice would be appreciated, many thanks once again, tony. ps. sorry i put my wrong email address, it`s correct this time, ormrod_tony47@hotmail.com

Hi Tony,

Pleased to hear the Hindley Ormrod family is the one
you were looking for. The only near-certain way I know
to locate the date and place of death is by searching
the civil registration indexes - "St Catherine's Index" -
for the period of interest (which should be accessible
at a local library in the UK or at a nearby Family History
Center). With the full reference from the index you can
order a copy of the certificate from the GRO in Southport
for 8 pounds, which typically takes about 3 weeks (they
take credit cards). For downloadable forms and fees, see

http://www.statistics.gov.uk/registration/certe_w/fees.asp

County record offices will also supply certificates at a
slightly lower cost, but in this case I guess the county is
uncertain. Presumably you would need to do this for all
instances of John Ormrod of the approximately correct age
at death and region of the UK, but given the narrow span of
years - 2nd quarter 1901 through 1906 - and relatively
uncommon spelling of the name, I doubt there will be that
many possibilities.

One additional piece of information on the John and Jane
Ormrod family is that there is a high probability that
there was another sister, Mary - 2 yrs older than Maud,
who married my mother's paternal grandfather Frederick
White, also a traveller, so John Ormrod would be one of
my great great grandfathers.

Good luck locating the information you are looking for.

Best Regards,

David
