I am trying to locate information about my great grandfather, his name was Thomas Radley. He was born in Ireland (around 1846-1848), his father was John Radley. John was married to a Mary Murphy.

According to US census information, he came to America (USA) around 1879 (he would have been in his early 30‘s). I believe he became a US citizen in 1884. His wife was Margaret, she was born and raised in Massachusetts, USA. They lived in Quincy, Massachusetts for a number of years. One of their sons was Daniel F. Radley (he was my grandfather). Thomas died in Quincy, Massachusetts, USA - on/about 11 November, 1922 at the age of 75 years. This would mean he was born around 1847(give or take).

I am trying to find a few pieces of information:

Where was Thomas Radley from in Ireland? When exactly was he born?

Does anyone have information on his parents, and his family?
John Radley and Mary Radley (maiden name Murphy)

I would appreciate any information, or guidance you might be able to provide. Thank you.

What religion was he? That will help place him in Ulster or in Ireland.

I find a Thomas Radley, labourer, arriving in New York in April 1872, age 22, with his wife, Mary, age 24, and daughter, Mary, age 6, aboard the SS Batavia out of Liverpool and Queenstown.

The 1880 census information gives differing info to what you have:

Boston, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts

Radley, Julia, age 26, house keeping, b. Ireland, parents b. Ireland
Radley, John, age 2 months, (b. March), son, b. Mass.
Radley, Mary, age 70, mother, b. Ireland, parents b. Ireland
Lorden, Dennis, age 16, nephew, works in store, b. Ireland, parents b. Ireland
(all living next door to a family of Murphys)

I think by 1900, he is remarried:

Radley, Margaret, Wife, age 60, married, b Mass.
Radley, Thomas, Son, age 32, widowed, b. Mass
Radley, Daniel F., Son, age 30, single, b. Mass

The Index to Griffith's Valuation of Ireland (1848-1864) lists three John Radleys, all in County Cork in the Parish of Aghabulloge -- three different Townlands: Roylane, Oughtihery, and Knockrour. You would need to see the original to find out in which years he was counted in which village to see if this might be the same guy.

Do you have Thomas' marriage registration to Margaret -- it may give additional information; as well, his death registration may tell you more.

Thanks for the information. The first Thomas Radley mentioned in the 1880 census was a different man. The other one listed for Quincy, Massachusetts is the correct one. My grandfather(Daniel) is listed as his son.

I know that my grandfather (Daniel F. Radley) and his wife (Anna M. Radley, maiden name O'Brien) attended a Catholic church, my father Harold F. Radley is also Catholic. I would assume that Thomas was Catholic as well.
