I am looking for any information on the following that were Captain's on the Great Lakes, primarily in Michigan from what I know now.

My great-greatgrandfather Nelson Gonyaw, captained the Mexoil and Panoil. His brothers Earl Gonyaw and Charles Gonyaw (also out of Tonawanda, NY). My great, great, greatgrandfather Nelson Gonyaw who died in the sinking of the Iosco in 1905 and his father Nazareth Gonyaw who also captained steamers on the Great Lakes.

Please let me know if you have any information on any of these people of if you could suggest a place that may have information. Thank you!

Yesterday, June 25, I attended the 56th Gonyaw family reunion. It is a gathering of Charles and Hannah (LeChance) Gonyaws descendants. Charles and Hannah had 9 daughters. For the 56 years, their daughters and now their families get together. Please email me at magreenough@wowway.com. Before the next reunion, I plan to trace the family back and update the current generations.

My father and grandfather were both Nelson Gonyaw's. I've heard stories about my great-grandfather being a steamboat captain in Michigan. Someone else noted that our name began as Gagnon also but when they came over from France it was changed to Gonyaw. I'm not sure when, but the family ended up in Memphis, TN where my father and I were both born. Since, our family has moved to the Dallas, TX area. My aunt was a very good source of information but has acquired Alzheimer's and I feel our history may be lost with her.
