Does anyone have ANY info about Sussana Kockis Melaga, born in Czech Republic in 1900 and came over in 1922, landing on Ellis Island with my father, John J? I have only 1 picture of her and very much would like any info or pics of her!!! I thought her mother was Mary Knee. Her father was John Kockis.

Thank you, Jacki Melaga-Clancy

They came from 1922's Czechoslovakia, but they were not from the area of today's Czech Republic. The arrival record says Zusanna identified herself and her children as Slovak. She even gives her husband's name in its Magyar/Hungarian form, Janos. It also mentions the locations "Jasa," "Ilassa" (probably the same place), and "Podzamidz." I have not been able immeidately to identify those placea.

The surname spelling Kockis does not occur in Slovakia. Perhaps it was Kocsis, the Magyar spelling for what today would be Koc'is, pronounced "KOH-chees," which means coachman.

My guess is that their hometown in the Old Country was Jasov,a large village about a dozen miles west of the city of Kos'ice in today's southeastern Slovakia. Until 1950, there was a separate adjacent smaller village called Jasovsky Podzamok, which seems a match for the "Podzamidz" reported as their place of birth.

My dad always called it Slovak. I was "Zues Ka" which I was told is Sussane as my middle name is Sue. I don't remember many of the words grampa used, maybe if I think awhile :)
