Peter, thank you for the reply. Yes the Barras/Bara line goes back to Jean Baptiste Bara dit LeBlond who came to the Louisiana colony in 1718. He moved to Point Coupee Par. and descendants moved eventually to Terreborne and other parishes. I now live in northern Virginia and am trying to maintain contact with researchers in LA. If you want to know more about the connection in France let me know. I am descended from the second wife, Marie Barbe Poch (var. spellings), of Jean Baptiste Bara dit LeBlond.

My family's roots are in Louisiana, primarily Terrebonne and Point Coupee Parishes so far. My Grandfather, Emile Barras Porche, was the Grandson of Jean Francois Porche and Perrine Barra. I don't know if there is any connection but there is a wealth of genealogy information at the "Family Search site that is put together by the Church of the latter day saints.

I read with interest your queries and information on "Barras of Terrebonne" Parish. I was told by my father's cousins that we were descendants of a "Barras" who supposedly was a "courtesan" of Josephine!! Have you ever heard this? My grandmother's name was Theresa Barras born in Philadelphia and her father's name was Abram Barras. Any chance that any of this rings a bell with you!!

Re: Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - I have no further information at this time - my grandmother still has many nephews that I have not yet been able to contact - I will keep you posted of any new information I receive! Someone in her family did do research but I have not yet been able to find out who? Thank you so much for responding to my message! If you come across anything that you believe may be helpful to me please be so kind as to let me know!

This is in response to your Terrebonne Parish msg.
Yes, I'm familiar with the Barras who was associated with Nepolean and Josephine. I do not have information that the said Barras had any connection to the Barras line that was started in 1718 by Jean Baptiste BARA dit LeBlond in the Louisiana Colony. But there may be some other connection via J. B. BARA siblings or ancestors in France that I have not yet researched. I would be interested in any other information you have re: BARRAS/BARA etc. in US or France.

Hey Stan, we've corresponded before but this is the first time I've seen mention of the Barras associated with Napoleon & Josephine. My grandma insisted that her husband was definitely related to that particular Barras from France. As the story goes: Vicomte Paul Henri Barras had a wife & 2 or 3 sons. When things got too hot in France, politically speaking, Vicomte headed for N. Ireland with his sons, settled them there with land, then returned to France to live out the rest of his life incognito. These sons, or at least 1 of them, moved to England, had a family, one of which was my grampa. I have here John Edward Barras b.1847 Leeds, York. who married Sarah Howden. (John's father was Paul Henri Francois Nicolas Barras) I do have the rest of the family names , dates & places from John Edward on down to today. I'll be glad to send the info if you think you have a match. Jay

Jay, I have made no connection between my Barras line and the Paul Barras associated with Nepoleon, etc. There may be one, however.
The father of the Jean Bara that went to the LA Colony in 1718 had another son named Thomas born in 1680. Thomas was the only other son I have been able to find so far. But I have not yet found out if he married or what happened to him. Getting that information may give us information on the continuation of this Bara (Barras) line or a dead end.

Sharon, do you have any additional info on your Barras that might connect to LA or France?
Stan.

Forgive me if I'm asking the wrong person on this thread, but I'm looking for information on Charles M. Barras, supposedly born in 1826 in Philadelphia (or perhaps somewhere else in Pennsylvania). Any info would be appreciated, even just what his middle name was and/or who his parents were.

thanks!
