I am searching for any information on Capt. William Jeffreys who is listed being born in Franklin Co, NC about 1748 and was married to a Mary Gray or Grey from the same town. They were parents of Mary Grey (Gray) Jeffreys born 1770, Franklin Co, NC, who married a Nathaniel Alston, born 1-19-1775 in Orange, NC, died 1852 Marengo, AL. They had at least one child and her name was Gillie Yancy Comfort Alston, born 9-24-1810 SC, died 10-19-1855. Gillie married James Alexander McMillan and Arthur Moore. McMillan children were Louise Anna Everlemo, Arabella Atlanta, Winnifred Alston, Marie Theresa Helen, Henry Clay, Katherine, and John Ulrich Kennedy. Moore children were William Hudson, Roderick Random Nathaniel, Mary Jeffers, and Arthur Alonzo. If you have any information, please e-mail me. Swanzy @AFS.tamu.edu.

I am working on the same tree. Capt. William Jeffreys was born 1748 in Franklin County, NC and died 11 Oct 1802. He married Mary Gray.
He was the son of Osborne Jeffreys Sr. (sometimes called the "Elder" who was born abt 1722 in Franklin, NC or perhaps in VA. He died 9 Dec 1793 in Franklin. He was the son of Simon Jeffreys b. abt 1675 in James City Co., VA and died in 1734 in Bertie Co., NC. Simon married Elizabeth Pottle b. abt 1679 in Northhapton, NC d. Jan 1741/42. She was the daughter of Joshua Pottle b abt 1651 in Northhampton, NC.

Osborne Jeffreys married Patience Spear b. 12 Nov 1724 in Bertie Co., NC d. Oct 1783 in Franklin, NC. She was the daughter of John Spear. John Spear married Patience Cotten b. abt 1695-1703 Isle of Weght, VA d. 25 Nov 1725 in Bertie Co., NC. Now it gets interesting!!!!!

Patience Cotten was the daughter of John Cotten b. 22 Apr 1658 Isle of Wight, VA, d. 1728 Bertie County, NC who married Martha Godwin b. abt 1654 VA d. abt 1732 Bertie, NC. She was the daughter of William Godwin of Nansemond Co., VA and Elizabeth Wright.

John Cotton was the son of John Cotton b. 1625 England d. 1691 NC and Anne Hutcheson Harrison b. abt 1640 VA d. Queens Creek, York Co., VA

John Cotton was the son of Sir Thomas Cotton b. 1594 England d. 1662 England. Son of Sir Robert Bruce Cotton b. 1571 d. 1631.

You can trace the rest of the Cotton line back to John de Cotenin born 1042 in Normandy France and Marie de Normandy. Ancestry.com has this line (although some are suspect) and putting Robert Bruce Cotton into a search engine like google.com will get you into Cotten sites.

Your lucky, I'm trying to prove that I can tie into this line. I have an ancestor named James Osborn Jeffreys Smith who was born at the right time (1802) in the right place (Warren or Granville Co, NC) with the right name (Osborn Jeffreys Sr. had an Osborn Jeffreys II and III) but I haven't made the connection yet.

To All of You,
In looking back you all may find that the birth town for the JEFFREYs is Franklin, NC, Macon Co.; not Franklin Co., NC. At least this is what most folks on ancestry have in their data. I am the 5th g-granddaughter/o Grizel (Yancey) ALSTON (Mrs. James Alston), the sister of Nathaniel ALSTON, h/o Mary Grey JEFFREYS / JEFFRIES. Whether this is correct, I have no idea but worth checking into and studying. I too, am curious about the JEFFREYS. BTW, the researchers have them dying and buried Franklin NC, Macon Co.

After reading a copy of Capt. William Jeffreys' will the correct county is Franklin Co., NC; sorry for the confusion and misinformation.
