I am looking for info and others who are searching the families on Steele Ridge.
|
I am working on the John J. Walker family, I believe they are from that area. I have an old photograph of the home that John J. Walker (Jr.) lived in. My husband's great grandmother was born in the house (Stella Mae). Unfortunately, the house is no longer standing due to development in that area.

Lisa, My husband is also a descendant of John Walker (1848-1922) and Mary Ann Fowler married 16 September 1869 Putnam County, Virginia at bride's residence.
John J/W Walker son of John Jackson Walker and Mary Ann Steele married 26 May 1848 Mason County, Virginia Rec Bk 1, page 46
Mary Ann Fowler daughter of Joseph Fowler and Judith Whittington married 2 November 1826 Kanawha County, Virginia
Stella Mae Walker sister of William Henry Walker married first Corda Edith Skidmore (my F-I-L's line) and second Tessa Locke.
Nancy and I would really appreciate your sharing any information on the families of Red House, Putnam County, (West) Virginia area, especially the Steele's.
Thanks for answering the query, Lois

I have John J. Walker (Jr.) who married Mary Jane Fowler.
His father is John Jackson Walker who married Mary A. Steele.
John Jr's daughter Stella Mae is my husband's great grandmother.

It looks like I have about the same info as you, but we can compare notes.
I do have a picture of the house John J. Walker and Mary J. Fowler raised their children in. My grandfather had it in a family album. He said that he kept it because it was the house his mother was born in. He took the photo back in the early 1950's. The house was unlived in at the time and really showing its age. As I said, due to development, the house no longer stands. The land has been leveled and a new set of houses built where the family home was. I was really sad about this because when I moved back to WV I was hoping to purchase one of the old family homesteads and restore it. But it seems that they've all been torn down in the name of progress.
I scanned the old photo. I can send you a digital copy if you email me.

I am reseaching the John J. Walker family too. My husband's family. I would love to have a copy of the picture of the Walker family home. Do you know exactly where it was on Steele Ridge? Would be glad to share what info I have.

My ggrandfather was John R Walker. Is he in your John Walker's line? Thanks
|
If he lived around that area of WV, then I'm fairly certain he is. I cannot say for sure yet, as I only do direct lines. But I can look.

Lisa, According to the 1880 Putnam county census, John R is listed as being in a family with: John J, Mary J, Nettie R., Mary E., Priddy J., James B., James P., Luvina C., Wm. C. Also living in the household are: John J., Mary, James , Sarah, William, Emanuel, Charlie. My ggrandfather was born is 1873 which would make him 7 at the time of the census. Is this family the same as the one you are researching? Thanks for your help, I know nothing about the family. My father would not talk about them. Debbie
