Info on Croom Workhouse

Surnames: Feane, Walsh
My grandfather was born in Croom Workhouse in 1913. Ive got his birth certificate and the fathers name isnt on it. He always referred to himself as a Feane, but many yrs later he found out that his mother registered him as a Walsh.

Does anyone out there know how to get records from the workhouse. I was told that some babies were taken away from their mums and in some cases, adopted. Not sure how to follow this up. Wonder if anyone could help!!

When women had illegitimate children, generally in the workhouse, they often gave a false name. I had this case in my own family where the name given on the birth certificate was false. The child was not adopted however but brought up by the mother who later married another man. We could not find the father's name and so that will always remain a mystery.
