I have Kentish roots, but apparently from another Harris line. My ancestors were from Maidstone. Rev. Abraham Harris (1760-1820) was a Unitarian minister in Maidstone. His sons were John Polhill Harris (1800-71) - died in Chicago, IL - and Rev. George P. Harris (1794-1859), a Unitarian minister and social reformer in England and Scotland who is buried in Newcastle-on-Tyne. Rev. Abraham Harris was born in Swansea, Wales.

Dan. Your Rev George Harris was apparently
well known for his works as a Unitarian
Pastor. Have you checked the Dictionary of
National Biography (DNB) for a listing on
this man? I have a copy of an excerpt from
the concise version which gives 2 1/2 columns
of history on his life career.

If you want to leave your email address, I
can also give you the address of another HARRIS
researcher in the Maidstone area. She is not
hooked up to your line as far as she knows at
this point, but you may want to compare notes.

Dwayne.

Dwayne: Thanks for the referral to the DNB for the biographical info on Rev. George Harris. From this and other reports, he was quite a character. I visited Maidstone in 1997 and saw the church and house associated with my ancestors. Please send me the name and address of your contact in Maidstone. My e-mail address is DCSEAVER@prodigy.net. Thank you again for contacting me. Best regards -- Dan

Surnames: Harris, Sharp
I am descended from an Australian branch of the Harris family that emigrated there in 1849 from Kent (specifically Maidstone, Cranbrook area) via India. There is mention of a "noble past connection back in Kent" in the family. My grandfather was named George James Harris. His grandparents were Charles Charles Harris and Winifred Sharp, both born in Kent around 1812, and married at Maidstone. Possibly related to the good general? Anyone know?

Can you tell me more about John Polhill Harris (1800-71) - died in Chicago, IL ? I have traced back to John P Harris born about 1829, but can go no further. John P Harris had a son Abraham who was my late husband's grandfather.

Dwayne, I wondered if you have access to anything on the Rev. John Toye, a Unitarian Minister at Durning Hall. London?
