I am also tracing the ASSELIN name. My greatgrandmother was Mary ASSELIN, originally from Canada. Her father was a Joseph or John ASSELIN. The story is told that either his parents or grandparents were separated before birth. There was a spanish governess that was the aid to a royal family. The story is told that the son of this family was taken with the spanish maid and they had an affair. She got pregnant and was put in prison. When the baby was born, the name of ASSELIN was given. Supposedly, ASSELIN, is supposed to mean " born in prison" The child and mother were placed on the slave ships headed for the new England and ended up in Canada. I am having great difficulty in tracinbg this name myself since the name was changed to so many different ones whenn they came to America. Check out http://ww.uftree.com for more info. Look at "MyFamilyForest" at the Pleau line for more info if interested.

My great-grandmother's maiden name was Mary Asselin or Ashlow. She was born Sept 26, 1871. She came from the Indian Reserve in St. Regis Falls in NY state. Her father's name was John born around 1830 and died 1896. Her husband was Joseph Lavigne who was born around 1864. She had 12 children. Some of the children live in Canada and some in the U.S.
Some of Mary's siblings were; Henri, Jean-Baptiste, Albert, Laura, Olivier, Eliza, (Zoe), Joseph, Basil, Ashlow. Then the other children are name "Asselin" Delia, abd Celina. If this is the right family, I have a line all the way to 1800 living in St-Constant, Laprairie in the Province of Quebec, Canada. Let me know if this is what you are looking for.

Here is the lineage that I have on Marie Asselin. She was my mother's maternal grandmother. Her father was John Ashlow born around 1830, died Jan 6. 1896. John Ashlow's father was Jean-Baptiste Ashlow born around 1803 died Feb. 22 1876. He was married to Zoa Surprenant. Jean-Baptiste's Father was also named Jean-Baptiste BUT he uses the name ASSELIN. He was married to Catherine Fifle. This second son, J.B. Asselin had a son Toussaint Asselin who married Felicite Boyer Oct. 6, 1800 in St-Constant, Laprairie, P.Q. Canada. Toussaint Asselin's father was Augustin Asselin who married Marie Josepht Migneron on Oct. 4th, 1773. Marie Ashlow's mother was Elizabeth Zoe Beauvais. Her ascendance unknown. Other spelling that you could try is: Ancelin. All this informations were gathered by my sister-in-law Gisele. Good luck and let me know if you find more info.
