Thank-you for the reply regarding John Walters.
Do you know any information regarding immigration to Australia? I can't seem to trace them with the back to England or Wales.
Thanks
JM

Hi Julie,

Were you able to find any further information? According to John's death certificate it says he emigrated to Australia around the age of 4 and was born in Wales. I haven't found much other than that. And I continue to find new surnames for Susan: Hemming, Henney, Hayes, Jeffery/Jeffrey so it makes it even more complicated.

I am not related, but have you considered that Susan may have been previously married before her relationship with John?

I see that they spent some time in NSW before going to Queensland and their son Ebenezer's birth was registered as WALTERS and also as JEFFERY with no father named.

Marriage in NSW:

2683/1857
JEFFERY, JOHN
HANNING, SUSAN
at TUMUT

James HENNING and Mary Ellen MIDDLETON married at Liverpool, Lancashire in 1841. They had a daughter Susannah whose birth was registered in 1842 at Liverpool and they arrived in NSW on the "Elizabeth" in 1844.

I wonder if John WALTER's parents are actually Walter WALTERS and Salome PRITCHARD, rather than Mahomey PRICE?

There is quite a bit of circumstancial evidence. Walter and Salome married in Staffordshire in 1834, they had children in Staffordshire (John and William)and at Monmouth in Wales (Sarah Agnes) and perhaps are the same couple who came to Australia and had children Harriet (1846) and Ebenezer (1850) in NSW. At some stage they also had a son named Walter S. who died in 1905 in Newcastle. It looks like both Walter Snr.and Salome also died in Newcastle.

Something to think about.

Debra

Hi Debra,

It's definitely something I've considered, even more so when the only marriage record I could find that makes sense is John Jeffery and Susan Hanning. On John Walters' death certificate in 1912, Susan was the informant and it says their marriage was registered in Hammond Falts, NSW, her name listed as Susan Henney and that she was 33 years old when they were married. I can't find any actual record for that (which doesn't surprise me if she was married to John Jeffery previously).

The informant on Susan's death certificate was the matron and I'm afraid not as accurate - details don't match up as well.

Thank you for your suggestion, I will definitely explore these names as an option. If you happen to run into anything else please don't hesitate to share - your help and insight is much appreciated!!

Sam

Susan had a daughter named Susanna with John JEFFERY in 1857. Following the possibility that the daughter married Richard SHRIMPTON in 1877 in NSW, this birth in Queensland is interesting:

Name: Walter Stephen SHRIMPTON
Birth Date: 27 Jul 1885
Father's Name: Richard SHRIMPTON
Mother's Name: Susan WALTERS
Registration Place: Queensland
Page Number: 13574
Registration Number: 000104

Walter Stephen seems to have been a popular name in the WALTERS family.

The link between Susan Walters and John Jeffery has thrown me, as Susan was my father's grandmother and he knows nothing of this; I must also look into the Salome PRITCHARD connection. The only problem is that the name Mahomey was used as a name in following generations.

After some more research I'm becoming more and more certain that Susan Walters was first married to John Jeffery. Some of Susan's children have both names on the documents.

Matilda's birth record in 1864 was registered under the surname Jeffery and she died the same year but her death registration is listed under Walters.

Ebenezer has both Walters and Jeffery surnames on his birth registration (born in 1865). One of the other ancestry.com members had an official copy of Ebenezer's birth certificate posted and it lists the mother as Susan Jeffery. Side note: Salome and Walter also had a son named Ebenezer (would have been Susan's brother-in-law), possibly another name passed along.

Susan's other son (and my husband's line) Walter Stephen Walter's official birth certificate also indicates Susan "formerly Jeffrey."

John Jeffery, Susan's possible first husband, passed away in 1863 so Susan must have met John Walters in that time frame and had Matilda. On Susan's death certificate it says that she married at 15 years old - which matches up to when she would have married John Jeffery in 1857 in NSW. It also explains why her next of kin listed on the death certificate don't match John Walters'.

If you're able to find out any further information from your father, please let me know. It's great to finally run into someone on the site that is researching this line. Would your father by chance have a photo of Susan and John Walters? I'm preparing a book for my mother-in-law and it would be so great to include one since her family has never seen one. I have an old family photo of Walter Stephen Walters that I'd be able to share.

It is wonderful after all this time to find someone else in the world looking for John and Susan Walters. I started this thread and check it every now and again and finally there is some interesting information. As to the marriage to John Jeffrey, this sounds probable; my father also thought Susan must have had a first marriage as we could not find evidence of an actual marriage to John Walters.

I do have a photo of Susan with my grandfather and his brother and I will send it.

I wish I could find out more about John Walters, the Salome and John Walters thread seems to fit in many ways, but the name Mahomey is still a puzzle
