Welcome to my new Betterley/Betterly surname board. We've been making great progress on this surname, and I owe big thanks to so many people. Please use this board to post your query or share whatever you have found that other Betterley/Betterly researchers may find interesting.

The History of Brookline, New Hampshire indicates that the early Betterley family history is sketchy but states that three brothers arrived in America in the early 18th century. The Marriage Index: Massachusetts, 1633-1850 (FTM CD 231) shows that Thomas Betterley married Elizabeth Alden (great grandaughter of John and Priscilla Alden) on 26 Jul 1720 at King's Chapel in Boston, MA. Mayflower Wills and Probate Records shows an Elizabeth Betterley as heir and descendant of John Alden, Jr. Jack Betterly of Troy, NY has in his records that Thomas arrived at about the age of eighteen months with his mother, Elizabeth. This could very well have been before 1700. I've found thus far that all Betterleys that can trace their family to colonial America can trace it to Thomas Betterley and Elizabeth Alden.

Mayflower Births and Deaths, Vol. 1 shows Thomas Betterly, b. 17 Nov 1723 in Boston, MA, as the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Betterly. The Suffolk VR CD-ROM from Search and ReSearch lists his marriage to Elizabeth Carson on 6 Apr 1749 in Boston, MA. Thomas and his wife were the parents of (apparently) two daughters named Elizabeth. Two of their sons served during the Revolutionary War. They were Thomas, who moved to Newfane Twp, Windham Co, VT, and William, who moved to Sugarloaf/Butler Twp, Luzerne Co, PA. Another son, George, moved to Woodstock, VT and then Brookline, NH.

It has been my experience that all Betterleys and Betterlys in America are related. My first wife and our two sons are Betterley descendants. I have been researching extensively for over a year, though I've worked on the family off and on for fifteen years. I have made great advances thanks to several contacts on the Internet.

Since you mentioned Brookline, NH, I assume you are descended from George Betterley (1769-1839). I don't have a definite connection to Percy, but I have seen the name before. My info on George's family came from four main sources. I welcome any corrections or enhancements you can give me.

I was told by Jack Betterley in Troy, NY that there was a brother to Thomas and William Betterley named George that was born in 1769. I found this fellow featured in "The History of Brookline, New Hampshire" at GenealogyLibrary.com. I then contacted Lela Squire of Battle Creek, MI at SQU123@aol.com and learned she is a descendant of George. Lastly, an uncle of Jean E. Betterley of Battle Creek, MI (descendant of Thomas, not George) had some similar info on the family of George.

I look forward to hearing back from you. You may e-mail me privately.

My 1st attempt @ "roots" and I spot a "family" name. Are you related? Betterley is my mother's maiden name and my grandfather had traced back as far as you indicated--Thomas; however, some of your "info" & mine defer. But this is a quick note--I have to go to work and will respond tonight. The Betterleys (my grandfather, Percy D. was born in Brookline,NH & that is why I responded--I'm so thrilled! Are you a researcher or is this name in your family-please advise--Linda Carlson, Worcester, MA

I am trying to find information regarding the marriage of Philander Betterley to Sophronia Thompson, which I believe took place in Caribou Maine Sept. 9 1886. Town records don't have it. Philander, born in Brattleboro VT on May 5, 1856 is son of George Warren Betterley and Ellen S. Betterley.

Hello,
My cousin Prudence Betterley and Iwere sitting here looking at different sites and found your old posting. Our Great Grandparents were Philander and Sophronia Betterley. Their son George Warren Betterley was our Grandfather. He married Gladys (?), last name unknown. Their son George Warren is my father and their other son William Seymour is Prudence's father.

Hi Shawn and Prudy!

I am your cousin Sara-Jane. My mom is Carol Goodwin Steeves, my dad is Robert George Steeves. Prudy, I believe you babysat me when I was a toddler in Bangor Maine!

Thanks for replying to my inquiry. I am seeking information in regards to our ancestors.

Specifically, I am looking for information regarding the marriage of Ellen S. Betterly (daughter of Samuel and Belinda) to George Warren Betterley in the 8th generation. Philander ws their son.... do you have anything...? Family bibles, wills, deeds, birth or death certificates?

Hi Sara,
Well aren't we foolish. Sara, I didn't know your married name and we didn't put two and two together. I do not have any of the information about George Warren Betterley 8th generation. Of course Grampy Betterley and my Dad were named after him. Maybe Aunt Bettey has knowledge.
Keep in touch and Merry Christmas.
Cousin Shawn

Hello Betterly Board. I'm looking for any info on the wife of Alton Betterly, the 6th great grandson of Thomas Betterly & Elizabeth Alden. Alton was born 9/3/1869 in Genesee Cty, Michigan, son of Andrew & Nancy from Pennsylvania. Alton married a Ellen M or Ella M around 1890 in Michigan. I found one board the listed a Ellen Butler, but I can not substancate the info. Ellen was born in August, 1873 by the 1900 Genesee Cty., Mich., records.

Any info on Ellen Butler???

Thanks,
Bob Spraker
