Hi Peggy-
My mother in law's mother was Mathilda V. Burfeind, she married Frederick J. Luhmann. I believe they lived in Stockton, MN and Lewiston before that. They had a ton of kids. My MIL is suffering from alzheimers so it has been tough for her to recall much. I know there are lots of Burfiends in MN and they have a big reunion every year. I don't know how many of the younger generations show up though. I am just starting on this family group-sorry I can't help more.

My grandfather was Walter Burfeind, lived in Minneapolis and St. Paul Minnesota, brother of Arthur, Clyde, Pearl. He had two children: my mother Mary and her adopted brother William. My parents had five children, John, Patricia, Kathleen, Michael, and Susan; Uncle Bill had two sons, James and Daniel in New Jersey. When I lived in Belgium, I met a man from Worpswede, Germany where there are lots of Burfeinds. The name is a dialect...Worpswede was an artist colony and the name means "enemy of the farmer." I'd like to know if Henry came from Worpswede and if it's Jewish.

My Great-Grandfather was John Burfeind of Germany. He came to the U.S. with 2 brothers...one ended up in Minnesota and the other in California. John ended up in Texas. I know that I have family in Minnesota, is this part of that family tree? My Grandfather was Albert Burfeind son of John.

My grandfather was Walter Burfeind and had brothers Clyde, Arthur and sister Pearl. In fact, they all came to visit us a few times. Pearl stayed with us when I was young and taught me how to knit. I didn't know about Henry and Emma Gundlach ... but my mother is Mary Burfeind Asselin, now in her late 80's. She had an adopted brother William Burfeind who served in the army stationed at Fort Dix, NJ for a full career.

When I lived in Brussels, Belgium in late 90's, I met only one man from Germany who had heard the name "Burfeind"... because it's a dialect, not regular Deutsch. He was from a small village called Worps Swerde near Bremen, which was an artist colony. He said that Burfeind means "enemy of the farmer." Bur or Bauer means farmer. He said there are lots of Burfeinds living in this village, unfortunately I never got there.

Do you know where Henry was born in Germany and the circumstances of moving to America? My grandfather never told me these stories.

Wow! Pearl was my grandmother. I only met Uncle Art when he had an ice cream shop in Oakland, CA when I was young. Wasn't there another brother, Clyde? Pearl married William Henry Hocking and had one child, my father, WM Henry Hocking, Jr. I too am an only child. I've just started trying to put research my family tree. Mother's side from Wales is easy, but the Burfeind part hasn't been so easy.
I don't know anything about Henry and Emma Gundlach, but hope to research that too. This is exciting. I look forward to hearing from you and will give you any info I have, which isn't much! Peggy (Margaret Anne) Hocking Houdek. We live in Lenox, MA

Peggy, I spoke with my mother, Mary Stuart Burfeind Asselin, and she'd like to write to you. She said Pearl had talked about you, that you were very artistic and musical. there were 6 children of Hans Henry Burfeind: Ernest(Joe),Clyde,Walter(my grandpa),Arthur,Pearl,Raymond. I met many of them when young, they visited the home my grandfather built for my parents on Summit Ave in St. Paul,MN after he retired from the lumber business. He lived with us. Hans Henry and his brother (John?) came from Germany to New Ulm and opened the first movie theater. I'd like to know more of what happened, how Henry met Emma, etc. What city they came from in Germany.
