Faught is definitely a german
name. Original name was
spelled vogt. So many names
were changed at port of entry
to correspond to the way they
sounded. Ours ended up FAUGHT.
My ancestors arrived in the
early part of the 1700's.

I believe the name has been shortened and once had a prefix. It was vinden_______.
My German friends tell me that the language is very practical and a person's name tied them to a specific place in Germany such as "by the bridge".

I located the name of Vogt
on some german records.
My ancestors were listed
as vogt on the ships passenger
list. They settled in Pa. then
later settled in Virginia. On
the Virginia records their
name had been changed to Faught.
Some names were americanized to
correspond to the way they sounded and some were changed
to correspond to the meaning
such as the German name of
Muhlinghaus which means house
of miller therefore the name
was changed to Miller when
they arrived in the US.

I've seen the Vogt reference also. I am descended from Adam P. Faught of Rockingham Virginia. Does that area of Virginia appear in anyone's history?

Did Faught move west?

OK Faughts, lets get into it.

We know Faught appeared in the east coast early in American history. Groups appeared from Virginia to Maine.

Then they moved west into TN, OH, MO early in the 1800s. Why were they moving? My Faught, the one who moved the most and lived the longest, was a Christian minister on the frontier before the Civil War. He either loved adventure or just didn't deliver good sermons and was encouraged by congregations to move.

Faught may have come from what is now Germany as early as the 1670-1730 because of religious persecution. Once settling in America religion could have been the motivator for all the moving around. I don't know any of this for sure, but this is the thread I am searching. Maybe my thesis is off, but it gives me something to compare to what I find.

Can any Faught help? Has anyone discovered where we came from in Europe?

Carl:
Hi, my dad's family comes from Arkansas. His dad, Dent or Denton Jefferson Faught was born in the 1890s. He married Anna Snow. They moved to Idaho in the 1930's due to the depression. The family settled in the Burley, Idaho area. My dad (Waldo nmn Faught) was one of 5 living sons and they had a sister, Nelma Rose Faught. All of my grandparent’s children were born in Arkansas before moving to Idaho, with possibly one exception, Ralph Faught the youngest. He may have been born in Idaho.
I was born in Rupert, Idaho in 1950. I am the second oldest of 7 children in my family. I have one older brother Daniel, with 5 younger sisters, Phyllis, Wanda, Ruth, Patricia (Patti), and Judith (Judie).
I am living in Springfield, MO now. So I guess you could say I have come home to the Ozarks.
