My Mothers maiden name was JEMSON - I have just started tracing my Family Tree and would like to contact anyone who is researching JEMSON in the Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England area. JEMSONs lived in Southend-on-Sea from the late 1790s or early 1800s. Please e.mail me at emmaedwardwoods@aol.com

Hi Edward,
I just got married last month, my husband is from Shoeburryness which is next door to Southend. I was looking to see where the name came from when I came accross your e-mail. Unfortunately my husband is working away at the moment, his e-mail add is jonjemson@hotmail.com, it is a very unusual surname, I had never heard of it untill i met my husband so I hope you have some luck.
yours
Jakkie.

Dear Jakkie,

Have only just come across your e.mail of 2nd December 2001. My Wife Emma gave birth on 25th November so we have been a bit tied up!

Since posting the message you replied to my research has advanced considerably.

My mother's maiden name was Edith Anne Jemson. I have aunts and uncles called John, Edward, Ernest, Ivy, Dorothy and Nicholas.

My Grandfather was Edward Thomas Jemson born in the 1880s - his birth was never registered by his parents John Jemson and Mary Ann Jemson (nee Dillon). He had at least one brother called John. Edward Thomas Jemson married Emily Bysouth (Have traced Bysouth line back to circa 1550s - I am in touch with dozens of people descended from the Bysouths!)

His mother died of TB in the late 1880s or early 1890s. Their Father died in 1938 or 1939 and is buried in Sutton Road Cemetery.

John Jemson was born circa 1850, the son of John Jemson born circa 1820 and Sarah Jemson (nee Brasier - Brasiers traced back to 1750s - I am in touch with a person descended from the Brasiers) Other children Elizabeth born circa 1843, Caroline born circa 1845, Emily born circa 1848. John Jemson married Sarah Brasier on 28th June 1842 at Prittlewell, Essex.

John Jemson born circa 1820 was the son of Robert Jamison/Jempson or Jemson and Elizabeth Jemson (nee Murrell - traced Murrells back to circa 1525 - In touch with several people descended from Murrells!). Other children include Joseph born circa 1817 (I am in touch with a person in New Zealand descended from Joseph) Robert born circa 1820, Mary Ann born circa 1832, William born circa 1835, Harriet born circa 1838.

The earliest event I have traced is the marriage of Robert Jamison to Elizabeth Murrell on 1st October 1816 Prittlewell Essex.

I have many gaps regarding marriages, dates of birth and death which I hope to fill in the next year or so.

I am very interested in acquiring copies of any old photographs of my Grandfather Edward Thomas Jemson or any of his relatives and if your husband is descended from these Jemson's and can be of any help please get in touch! My Grandfather was also in the army and I am interested to find out which regiments and were he served so I can try and track down his service records.

Anyway hope the above is of interest.

Kindest Regards

Edward Woods

Hi Edward:
Think I might be distantly related to you. I come from a line of Jemsons that has its origins in Lancashire around the town of Fleetwood. My great Grandfather John Jemson farmed in the area and made enough money in the First World War to send two of his children to Medical School at Guys Hospital in London -they were James Jemson (my namesake) and Betty aka Bessie Jemson. My father John Jemson also went to Guys and emigrated to Canada in 1957. I was born in Ramsgate Kent when my father was in the RAF doing his National, but have lived in New Zealand since 1987 as I am married to a Kiwi.
I am just getting started in this area and would like to haer from anybody with further info as Jemson is an unusual surname - when I was growning up in rural Canada, I never met anyone with the same name until I went to England for a holiday when I was seven - it was a bit of a weird expereince!
Looking forward to hearing from you
Best Regards
James Jemson

Hi James,
My great grandfather was Henry Thomas Jemson who married
Elizabeth Mary Murrell. Thanks to Edward Woods who made the connection with my family name of Jameson.I had no luck finding my grt grandfathers birth until I looked under Jemson.
Henry thomas was born 24 Oct.1845,Southend on Sea.His father was Joseph Murrill Jemson, mother was Catharine Jemson formerly Hay,also from Southend.
Henry had two brothers,William Murrell Jameson and Joseph.
I have still not found their births!
The brothers came to New Zealand and opened astore in Wellington.Jameson Bros and co,Grocers, wine and spirit merchants, and coffee and spice manufacturers.
There appear to be several spellings of the name but Jameson seems to have been adopted since the move to NZ in 1871.
I am now looking for info on Robert Jamison and Elizabeth Murrell from Prittlewell. They were married 01 October 1816,St Marys,Prittlewell.
Look forward to your reply.
Caron

I was wondering if you could help me. I am looking for an Eliza Jempson born around 1860-70. Her husband was George Short b. 1867 in Dorset England. I can not find record of their marriage and I only have her name from a hand written copy of my grandfathers birth certificate. They lived on Guernsey Island but I do not know if she is from there. I could not find her being born there in LDS records. Her sons name was Wilfred Arthur Short b May 3, 1913. Dont know if they had any other children. He did in the war and my grandmother remarried and never spoke much about her first marriage. Any help would be great, I cant seem to get a lead on her. thanks Chrissie
