Ancestry Military records shows the death of a George Cherrill on Dec 27th 1854 (1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, ref 538). It looks like he probably died between campaigns - he received Alma & Inkermann medals, but died before Sebastopol.
What is the easiest way to identify who this "George Cherrill" is - I have one in my tree born in Dorchester, Oxfordshire in 1830 who I have lost trace of.
- How can I prove this G.Cherrill's age and place of birth?

Unlike most regiments, historical records of those who served in any of the Guards Regiments are held at the relevant regimental HQ.
Although some records were lost during WWII a letter the Coldstream Guards HQ is the only chance of finding any information on him.

See http://www.theguardsmuseum.com/Family-Research for contact details.
If you write don't forget to insert "Coldstream Guards Regimental HQ" above the address given.

Good Luck

Carol,

If you've not yet contacted the Regimental Archives please be aware that I have now got a copy of the actual Crimea Medal Roll and Private George Cherrill's regimental No is 3538 and not 538 as stated.
The error could have come from the fact the first digit is in the shadow of page folds.
